@sabi First one I actually remember was definitely 56.6K, though of course it only ever connected at 48.8 (or 33.6 on a bad day) because phone lines are a thing. I think I may have used worse on my grandmother's or father's systems when very very young, but not sure.

I will never, so long as I shall live, ever forget what the dialing/connection tones sounded like, lol.

@nazokiyoubinbou you never forget modem connection sounds. You could turn off the speaker but I’ve never known anyone that did!

@sabi Could you turn it off with ISA modems? Most of what my family had were internal. We only had one external and we preferred the internal.

I suppose they might have had DIP switches or somesuch. I never actually looked at them back then. (They were in my parents' computers, so it wasn't up to me.)

It is useful to hear that it's functioning I guess. I would have liked to turn it down though. The one external did have a volume control.

@nazokiyoubinbou I can’t remember for sure but I think you could turn the speaker off with AT commands. It’s been a long time since I thought about it
