I don't know about the latest versions (I'm still on 2.x) but the #Fedilab version I use has auto-truncation of long posts (when I turn it on, defaults to off) and media is only loaded automatically on Wi-Fi: on mobile data that's tap to load. I don't know if any of those features survived the code rewrite though and it is a bit of a big app. Also, Android only.
For Linux PC, I have a bunch of scripts I wrote for the #OldComputerChallenge that act as a lightweight client… @csepp
