With the ongoing #COVID19 pandemic and #H5N1 deadly Bird Flu on the rise, let's review what we have learned over the past 4 years.

You are on your own.

No one is coming to save you.

No one but your friends and family will care whether you die or become permanently disabled.

Your employer cares more about their bottom line than your life.

Use your brain and the best tools at your disposal (masks, distancing, good ventilation, etc.)

Science deniers, anti-maskers, and conspiracy theorists will scream like toddlers and should be ignored.

Government and business in your country will benefit long-term from data obfuscation and risk denial (ignoring the problem means they don't have to spend money on it).

Assume the worst and act accordingly.

Don't give in to peer pressure - your life is on the line.

Arm yourself with the most recent scientific data and stand ready to combat ignorance when it rears its ugly head.

Agreed with everything except this bit:
> Government and business in your country will benefit long-term from data obfuscation and risk denial.

Quite the contrary.

We are in a race between education and annihilation.

With this point, I am thinking specifically of governments being able to end pandemic emergency aid programs to save money and of businesses being relieved of their obligation to accommodate workers and provide safety equipment.

In the short term, the pandemic raised costs for governments and businesses (essential worker pay bumps, expanded Medicaid spending, covering the cost of vaccines, etc.)

If we no longer report COVID data, the pandemic is over, right?

@shansterable Usually, these days, not even family or friends care, mostly. At least not mine. Ended 2022, that phase.

I have unfortunately heard other stories like yours. Sorry to hear it.

@shansterable They just cannot be careful for others if they cannot be for themselves. Usually, some folks at least somehow do what i ask for if i kind of force them. But i have to do that every single time, no way of doing it without me having to point it out. I am so tired …

And right now, here in Germany the coughing spreads again. In the last two weaks it got worse, i had that feeling in Nuremberg, and now it is beginning here in Bremen, too

Came here to echo that sentiment. My *immediate* family (wife + kids) do, and some close friends but... Everyone else who has been in my life for years? No, they do not.

@shansterable I’ve been around for a bit more than half a century and #Covid is the worst disaster I’ve ever witnessed. September 11, 2001 was a minor blip compared to the mass delusion, coerced infection, and horrific levels of disability and death this thing is causing.

Thank you for expressing why I’ve been so demoralized lately. It lets me feel just a tiny bit less alone. Followed.

I remember walking across the Manhattan Bridge, thinking, "None of these people are terrorists. But we are all about to be treated as such." It might have been more accurate to say suspected terrorists, as we were not actually imprisoned.

Now the surveillance state has metastasized into the infection state. It's bleak.

@shansterable y'all have friends and family that check on you?

@shansterable nope. Most friends and family also didnt give a shit, but this was no surprise because they didnt give a shit about much else either and it was only a matter of time before I kicked them all to the curb. As a leftist (a leftist, not a liberal lol) I had already beefed with most of these people for decades, and COVID was the nail in the coffin.

Now Ive made a new family, and am working on new friend groups, and so far so good. We understand science and history, we are medical and tech professionals, and we are NOT giving up on protecting one another.

We will mask for the rest of our lives, and should have been masking long before COVID. Why did americans and westerners never try to stop vulnerable people from catching every nasty thing that came around seasonally? Why were we not masking before, and why was there racism aimed at Asian travelers who would mask seasonally?

@shansterable what I really need to know is, in the event of another global pandemic, what measures have been put in place to stop smug, out of touch celebrities singing 'Imagine' at us?

ivy is birdposting Ⓥ

@shansterable

- Humans will continue exploiting animals for momentary pleasure until it wipes us and every other species off the face of this planet due to zoonotic disease, biodiversity collapse, or the climate crisis.
