Ahhh, good ol' self-referential humor. ☺️

@cwebber Oh, it's simple if you speak Klingon.

"ActivityPub" is just how speakers of Federation Standard pronounce the borrowed version of the original Klingon phrase _'aq tI, vI' tIy pab_.

The first part, _'aq tI_, means "vegetation predicts it" — in other words, a grassroots movement saw the Fediverse coming, and was able to prepare a segment of society to use it. Meanwhile, the latter portion _vI' tIy pab_ can be loosely translated as "follow the curly point", which is a bit more opaque but probably refers to practice of ending sentences with a comma instead of a period to emphasize that you will always have more to say in the future (since now you are on a platform that doesn't limit all posts to 280 characters).

I hope that makes it clearer.

@cwebber ActivityPub is a federated social networking protocol for the World-Wide Web developed under the auspices of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The 2018 specification document, a W3C Recommendation, was edited by Christine Lemmer-Webber and Jessica Tallon with contributions by Erin Shepherd, Amy Guy, and Evan Prodromou. Notable implementations of the protocol include Mastodon, Meta Threads, Pixelfed, and PeerTube.

The protocol's successor, OCapN, remains in development by Lemmer-Webber and Tallon's Spritely Networked Communities Institute and other contributors.

@cwebber You should try asking that John Mastodon guy. I think he invented it.

DELETED

@cwebber Not voting, I don't see the option for a Public School Felt Board with cars, buildings, and glued-together happy felt and pipe-cleaner people I can move around.

(Yes, I'm old enough to attend a school in the 1980s with leftover 1970's "edutech" that I shouldn't have even seen.)

Paul McO'Smith III

@Cefr @cwebber it is similar. it is a pub with no hard surfaces or sharp corners, with beer served in plastic cups so that the kiddies in the pub don't get injured when the inevitable glass throwing starts.

frankly, that sounds like the pub on the corner most nights.

Parnikkapore

@cwebber I love how you're simultaneously an adult, a public figure for an entire organization, and silly

Eniko | Kitsune Tails out now!

@cwebber activitypub is a monoid in the category of endofunctors

cafkafk

@cwebber I voted for all of them because I like checking boxes sorry

Brandon Haber

@cwebber activitypub, or more formally, Mastodon/ActivityPub, is a small part of a larger decentralized ecosystem of... <strangling noises>

Daphne⭐ (v2.🦊)

@cwebber Not for nothing, but it looks like the correct answer is leading by a good margin here. Meow.

ghostdancer

@cwebber Missing the furries option, I guess it must be included with the catgirls one. I'll vote for that then.

Parade du Grotesque 💀

@cwebber

It's like a decentralized, asynchronous email network for catgirls.

Oh wait...

Christine, please, stop making fun of my mansplaining!
