@emmetoneill it's definitely cool and interesting. I've learned a lot tonight about how it being decentralized has improved people's experiences

@ItsSheVee Yeah, there are definitely benefits to decentralization when it comes to everything from simple convenience to moderation. It's really not good that big portions of the internet these days are concentrated in a handful of corporate websites.

Of course nobody can say how this whole thing scales, but I get a sense right now that the community is better for it.

(Also from a basic tech standpoint it's a really interesting twist on the modern internet.)

@emmetoneill sort of takes us back to the wild west the internet once was and I love it

@ItsSheVee Yeah. I feel the exact same way!

I wasn't around for the dial-up BBS era, but I certainly remember the days of personal websites and prominent forums, as well as private game servers (which are still around, but kind of a dying breed sadly).

The fediverse takes that old private server mentality, fuses it with modern social media, and then connects it all together. With a critical mass of users I think it could be the future... (And a much better one at that.)

@emmetoneill I refused to ever give up having a personal site and self-hosting things. There's a reason this whole tech thing became my career 😅
