I heard people were flocking here in droves after Elon bought the bird app, so I came back. Turns out there's a pretty sweet community here. :)

Have always distrusted centralized authority and I do like free/open source in specific. The real question is why it took so long, and that's because of stumbles with previous attempts (e.g. Diaspora and identi.ca) and the constant problem of monopoly enclosure that federation hopes to solve. That is, I still have too many contacts on Facebook and Twitter that I want to keep in touch with.

@ItsSheVee I like to use my software in an endangered language. Mastodon can be translated freely, Twitter cannot (except for the Cawbird client). So, I got an account here in the sae month that I signed up on Twitter.

@ItsSheVee I do have a problem with "big" centralized platforms, but I still use a few of them (YouTube and Discord.) The real reason why I started using Mastodon was because Twitter felt too hostile and convoluted *and* I liked the idea of decentralization.

There are things on there that I wish were here, but whatever.

@ItsSheVee In my case, I first heard about mastodon because of the Elon and Twitter issue, but that's not why I decided to try it, but because when looking up what federated networks, mastodon, and fediverse are all about, I noticed two stuff: A) the existence of something like this is great, I had to join, and B) there is so much I have to learn about this kind of thing, maybe by joining Mastodon I was going to learn little by little about it.

@ItsSheVee Twitter being a hell-hole way before Musk; I never even started there. Mastodon was my first microblogging platform. Open source was a massive point in the "Pros" column.

@ItsSheVee I originally came to Mastodon during G+'s shutdown and returned because the Twitter Exodus increased the activity.

@ItsSheVee I had heard of it from somewhere (I honestly can't remember where😅) and was interested and decided to join!

@ItsSheVee We originally wanted to try something different in 2019. We wanted to branch out from Facebook and Twitter. G+ had recently joined the Google Graveyard and we wanted to try something different. Mastodon and the open source concept seemed cool, so we hopped on.

I do agree Twitter needs to keep much of the partial fact checking and moderation in place that they do already. And, I always prefer open source but just never felt compelled before now to give Mastodon a chance.

@ItsSheVee Definitely fear of the bird app going crazy without moderation. To be honest, I was already seeking an alternative. Something that encouraged less endless scrolling, less outrage, and few algorithms. I don't plan to leave the birdsite yet, but I am trying to spend less time on it overall.

Plus, I'm digging decentralized social media. Reminds me of the early/mid 2000s before Facebook and Twitter existed.

@ItsSheVee I heard about Mastadon a DEFCON last year, and just now decided to give it a try. It also helped that I watched a video about the Fediverse and became fascinated. I've barely scratched the surface.

@ItsSheVee in 2020 fearing that my account might get suspended due to US legislation being anti-queer, increasingly anti everything "defiant" and therefore banning me for publishing queer nsfw books and being nonbinary.
Watching the legislation in 2022 which wants to ban social transition in some states... well, I wish I weren't right to fear this very outcome.

I've abandoned #Twitter two years before Elon bought it. It became an alt-right heaven and, unlike #Facebook, didn't offer anything to compensate for this.

@ItsSheVee Because Twitter feels like it is now an almost monopoly. Yes I dislike Elon buying it, because it will be his play thing, but the issue is bigger than just the specific rich guy. The owner could be some shady org with a hidden agenda. Too many rely on twitter and can't see themselves leaving. Too addictive while depending on owners' good intentions.

@ItsSheVee Like with FB before, Twitter startet to get more and more irrelevant for me. Not sure if this was due to changes of algorithms or other things. It was just no longer worth my time. However I learned about Mastodon due to media reporting about Elons plans. So in a way, he's the reason to learn about and try a new Network.

@ItsSheVee I heard about it from some people on twitter including hbomberguy in 2016 just after it launched, I signed up but didn't use it much till 2017 when there was a big movement of people from twitter that reminded me of it, I've been here on different servers ever since, not as a reaction to anything bad happening elsewhere but because I enjoy being here
