@ItsSheVee I was lonely and I didn't wanna be on the centralised corporate shit.
@ItsSheVee I heard about this only because of the Elon desaster. So i came here to see how it is...and i realized: it is really nice here and i like it better than Bird app as it now is. So...no matter how Twitter develops: i am mainly here now and only show up once and a while to post something somewhere else, and then come back @ItsSheVee And i finally see ALL the content the people i follow post. In the art community on insta/twitter artists who cannot put out content like crazy, become invisible because the algorythms hide their content from their followers. That is a desaster for mental health. A chronological timeline erases this inhuman treatment and people are allowed to rest. @ItsSheVee Came here earlier, but the newest wave of accounts and activity is really nice. @0xReki kinda same. I came originally in 2017 when it first went public and I was really excited but felt like I wasn't finding enough people. Excited again to see where things go with this big influx of users @ItsSheVee I'm not so excited about those freedom gatekeepers — it's the worst aspect of any FOSS community. Sure, there's some truth to it, but it kills the notion people over here are more friendly. @0xReki are there people here who would prefer "others" would stay away? I haven't encountered that yet @ItsSheVee Some very vocal people unconditionally want to remove any crossposters. @ItsSheVee @ItsSheVee I left Facebook years ago and I'm trying off and on to set up a more controlled, more private web presence. @babble_endanger definitely understand that. My partner has basically zero online presence and I have to appreciate it @ItsSheVee @aspensmonster To have a Nice Thing on the internet that is run by people who aren’t only concerned with making money. @ItsSheVee no, a really nice club does it for me and for just one Euro a month. @maiathecyberwitch @fredrik also valid! I realized after I had already posted I should have tried to allow multiple answers but it's also interesting in knowing people's primary reason @ItsSheVee @fredrik to me 1 and 2 are intertwined, Elon will slacken moderation, and that was what finally Got me back on here, but I also love the Nature of the fediverse and how we can build our own feed instead of being Force-fed an by an intransparant algorithmic one, were not Exploited and datamined and sold to 3rd parties, and as an admin I have moderation power to protect my community. Also there are so many wonderful, helpful and interesting people on here, @maiathecyberwitch @fredrik i don't disagree, but I don't know that everyone necessarily sees it that way. I think for some, Elon is enough reason by himself @ItsSheVee @fredrik I think you’re absolutely right, he’s also plenty reason for me tbh, especially given how his insufferable fanboys are gonna go wild now @ItsSheVee All of the above. Plus I hate the feed manipulation on the bird site, and promoted tweets related to bullshit like crypto currency @ItsSheVee I felt like social media was too addictive, toxic and wanted to try something different. I am not disappointed and I am glad to be on a social media that treats me as a human and not as a data cattle. @louisrcouture that was the reason I deactivated my Facebook account years ago. Went back to connect with old friends but I basically never look at it @ItsSheVee I’m here since march 2017 ! I wasn’t a dad yet. My life has changed so much since I started tooting here 😅 @xakan I'm old enough that I shouldn't, but I'm still very amused that it's called tooting 😂 @ItsSheVee we can also play with words as “pouet” sounds close to “pet” which means fart. We’re all old kids. For the eternity. @ItsSheVee Word of mouth, and a bit of FOSS love (if it was proprietary, like Discord that I discovered the same way, I wouldn’t have jumped in (so I don’t use Discord)). @ItsSheVee Saw some mutuals on birdsite checking the place out, and I was the only one from that group who stayed. @ItsSheVee All of them? Was already here, but this place came alive since Elon made his offer. Hoping it keeps growing when he finally withdraws that offer in half a year. @cimeryd yeah I think the deed is done at this point. Hopefully this will start to be a primary home for more folks @ItsSheVee It's less than certain. There's a fair chance, if Tesla stock dips further, that financing really becomes an obstacle for him. Or if Twitter stock dips, since after the merger that's what secures his bank loans. I can't competently summise it in 500 characters, but the Opening Arguments podcast just did a great 2-part breakdown of the various pitfalls. @cimeryd oh sorry I agree with that. I meant I don't think people will go back to Twitter if the deal falls through (breakup fee is $1B though so he might do everything he can to keep it alive now) @ItsSheVee No Ads!! No "smart" algorithms and better privacy by self-hosting my instance @ItsSheVee Inadvertently because of Elon, I guess. I've wanted to get into Mastadon for a long time and have tried once or twice, but there were relatively very few users. I heard people were flocking here in droves after Elon bought the bird app, so I came back. Turns out there's a pretty sweet community here. :) @ADHDefy I would say my story is similar. I've had my account(s) since the project went public but now that there has been such a surge in users I'm gonna try to be more active @rebekahkohlhepp I think many would agree with you! But still fun to see what people will pick as the most important @blu256 what a great story! Glad that you found something that makes you feel comfortable! @ItsSheVee@mastodon.social @ItsSheVee I discovered the Mastod social network simply, while curious, looking for Internet applications with more privacy. @ItsSheVee In these times, the use of personal data makes people who wish to communicate dubious, unsafe and very fearful without the risk of being exposed to the whole of the globe or to undisputed companies. But the quantity of users is preferred to quality. And applications are still being used that are either publicly uncertain or without privacy. @ItsSheVee@mastodon.social can't remember... someone told me years ago to take a look and i did. and now i have my own instance... Have always distrusted centralized authority and I do like free/open source in specific. The real question is why it took so long, and that's because of stumbles with previous attempts (e.g. Diaspora and identi.ca) and the constant problem of monopoly enclosure that federation hopes to solve. That is, I still have too many contacts on Facebook and Twitter that I want to keep in touch with. @TerryHancock yeah I'm keeping the other services for now too but hoping to shift more of my attention over here where it feels less toxic @ItsSheVee I like to use my software in an endangered language. Mastodon can be translated freely, Twitter cannot (except for the Cawbird client). So, I got an account here in the sae month that I signed up on Twitter. @gunchleoc that's a really cool benefit that I had never considered! Glad that you can feel more at home here! @ItsSheVee I'm used to messageboards, so this immediately felt more like home than Twitter, because of the decentralized nature of the network. @ItsSheVee@mastodon.social I came to Misskey because I love open source (and Ai-chan!) @ItsSheVee@mastodon.social I do love open source software, however the reason I got round to going onto misskey was because of concerns about bird app's future now that madman musk is in charge @ItsSheVee indirectly Elon. I've been on here for a while but I've found it much easier to pick up now. Here, there will be more data from Spanish speakers: https://social.politicaconciencia.org/@maperal/108229122406408885 @ItsSheVee I do have a problem with "big" centralized platforms, but I still use a few of them (YouTube and Discord.) The real reason why I started using Mastodon was because Twitter felt too hostile and convoluted *and* I liked the idea of decentralization. There are things on there that I wish were here, but whatever. @ItsSheVee whatever pissed everyone off like 6 years ago that made a bunch of us start accounts. but im back now because of friends who left because of elon's dumb ass - not mutually exclusive groups. @ItsSheVee In my case, I first heard about mastodon because of the Elon and Twitter issue, but that's not why I decided to try it, but because when looking up what federated networks, mastodon, and fediverse are all about, I noticed two stuff: A) the existence of something like this is great, I had to join, and B) there is so much I have to learn about this kind of thing, maybe by joining Mastodon I was going to learn little by little about it. @ItsSheVee The most popular social networks were making me tired, they are more of the same. And they generate psychological discomfort for me. @ItsSheVee I'm an adult content creator and since all the big social media networks have bowed to the payment processors and banned adult content, I feel like it's only a matter of time until Twitter, the last one standing, is going to do conform as well. So I'm looking for alternatives before that happens. As a writer, I'm not the first target but I want to be where the NSFW artists and erotic photo models are. @ItsSheVee 100% because of Elon. Also quit FB years ago, I just couldn't handle the misinformation anymore. Still trying to find my way around Mastodon. @ItsSheVee Because that damn blue bird put me in weird box. But before being boxed in, it was pretty informative. Years ago that was. @ItsSheVee Originally, most of the listed reasons, but back again because of Musk(ov)y-Twitter @ItsSheVee@mastodon.social Back in August 2020, I got so fed up with the hate and toxicity I kept getting from Twitter, that I went on alternativeto.net and found Mastodon. And I've been a fedi regular ever since. @ItsSheVee@mastodon.social just saw tootle in the gnome softwared store and thought it was cool @ItsSheVee Twitter stopped being fun. It turned into a place where people came to complain about the same thing as everyone else and my whole timeline suddenly had the exact same opinion about every topic that came along. It was a horrible combination of boring and insufferable. I needed something new and wanted it to be something I could fully control. @ItsSheVee @ItsSheVee while I love open source, the main reason I joined Mastodon was to get away from the toxicity that is on Twitter. @ItsSheVee an interest how new social networks work and develop (I am here already some time) @ItsSheVee @ItsSheVee Twitter being a hell-hole way before Musk; I never even started there. Mastodon was my first microblogging platform. Open source was a massive point in the "Pros" column. @ItsSheVee I originally came to Mastodon during G+'s shutdown and returned because the Twitter Exodus increased the activity. @ItsSheVee I had heard of it from somewhere (I honestly can't remember where😅) and was interested and decided to join! @ItsSheVee We originally wanted to try something different in 2019. We wanted to branch out from Facebook and Twitter. G+ had recently joined the Google Graveyard and we wanted to try something different. Mastodon and the open source concept seemed cool, so we hopped on. @ItsSheVee European Commision etc has joined as well. @ItsSheVee I took a look because of Musk, mainly because it spurred people I follow to try it out. I’m wanting to stick around because it seems like a better place in general and open source makes me happy. @ItsSheVee Voted "other" because of "all of the above," really. Elon was the trigger, however I'm still open to using Twitter depending on what decisions they make. I do agree Twitter needs to keep much of the partial fact checking and moderation in place that they do already. And, I always prefer open source but just never felt compelled before now to give Mastodon a chance. @ItsSheVee Definitely fear of the bird app going crazy without moderation. To be honest, I was already seeking an alternative. Something that encouraged less endless scrolling, less outrage, and few algorithms. I don't plan to leave the birdsite yet, but I am trying to spend less time on it overall. Plus, I'm digging decentralized social media. Reminds me of the early/mid 2000s before Facebook and Twitter existed. @ItsSheVee it was the cool new thing back in 2017 Moderation was also a factor, but that's more in hindsight @ItsSheVee I heard about Mastadon a DEFCON last year, and just now decided to give it a try. It also helped that I watched a video about the Fediverse and became fascinated. I've barely scratched the surface. @ItsSheVee A combination of all of the above plus the fact that it's hard to actually connect/converse with people on Twitter because either their tweets and replies are targeted to counter their 'opposites' or trolls jump in and derail any topic. @ItsSheVee I genuinely believe centralized social media is destroying both democracy and society. @ItsSheVee Using the opportunity to ‘de-capitalise’ social networks, one user at a time. @ItsSheVee I'm part of the Twitter refugees that came just after Musk bought the platform. For some reason, i prefer a platform such as this which is not run by a Billionaire. @ItsSheVee I came to Fosstodon before the Elon fiasco. I came because my Twitter timeline was cluttered with promoted rubbish and ads and because I didn't want to be monetised. @ItsSheVee I fatfingered the wrong entry; but mine was "other". I've been here for a while, and got twitbanned years ago. @ItsSheVee Other: Someone recommended it to me, and when they described it I knew it was a new alternative to GNU Social that was better-designed for average users. I had already tried GNU Social and liked the concept in principle but left because I wanted it to be more user-friendly and Twitter-like and busy, so I was immediately interested in Mastodon! @ItsSheVee It was on top of the list here: https://www-androidpolice-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.androidpolice.com/best-new-android-apps-april-2022/amp/?amp_gsa=1&_js_v=a9&usqp=mq331AQIKAGwASCAAgM%3D#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&aoh=16514788407622&csi=0&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&share=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.androidpolice.com%2Fbest-new-android-apps-april-2022%2F @ItsSheVee in 2020 fearing that my account might get suspended due to US legislation being anti-queer, increasingly anti everything "defiant" and therefore banning me for publishing queer nsfw books and being nonbinary. @ItsSheVee It was a joke. RTFM = Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, and Mastodon. But I'd never heard of that "Mastodon" thing, so I had to look it up. So when I got tired of how good people I knew became bad people on Facebook, I knew how to go to Mastodon... to find good people I didn't actually want to know :/ @ItsSheVee @ItsSheVee@mastodon.social Initially because I had to add something to my Keybase account; then realized it didn't support the instance I joined.. now I run my second instance and I;m hella addicted! :cool_felix: @ItsSheVee Joined years ago, but never did anything with it. Recent events reminded me it existed and using it a little more now 🙂 @ItsSheVee Curiosity. I have used #Diaspora* for several years until the argentinean pod went belly up. I've abandoned #Twitter two years before Elon bought it. It became an alt-right heaven and, unlike #Facebook, didn't offer anything to compensate for this. @ItsSheVee Because Twitter feels like it is now an almost monopoly. Yes I dislike Elon buying it, because it will be his play thing, but the issue is bigger than just the specific rich guy. The owner could be some shady org with a hidden agenda. Too many rely on twitter and can't see themselves leaving. Too addictive while depending on owners' good intentions. @ItsSheVee Like with FB before, Twitter startet to get more and more irrelevant for me. Not sure if this was due to changes of algorithms or other things. It was just no longer worth my time. However I learned about Mastodon due to media reporting about Elons plans. So in a way, he's the reason to learn about and try a new Network. @ItsSheVee I heard about it from some people on twitter including hbomberguy in 2016 just after it launched, I signed up but didn't use it much till 2017 when there was a big movement of people from twitter that reminded me of it, I've been here on different servers ever since, not as a reaction to anything bad happening elsewhere but because I enjoy being here @ItsSheVee I don't remember why exactly I stumpled upon it in 2017 but I don't remember it being one of the three other options, so... other :D @ItsSheVee fancied trying something new and a friend from Twitter is moving over permanently |
@ItsSheVee I cam over during that Tumblr nonsense back in 2019.
