@ItsSheVee I came maybe two or three years ago for only one reason, because a good friend of mine said hey I just joined this thing and you should give it a shot. Nothing more than that. @ItsSheVee all of the above, but right now because of Musk. I hadn't been active on Twitter for a long time. It seems nicer here so far. @ItsSheVee I’d already pretty much finished with Twitter last year, and it seemed like things might get a bit worse there now so that motivated me finally give mastodon a try. I don’t know if Elon gave the final push or just the thought of all the impending takes on that topic. Either way - no thanks. @ItsSheVee I voted other. I didn't want a corporation running the community I participate in. @ItsSheVee The time was right to ride the wave of decentralisation and hope this time my friends would join me. I was frustrated that Elon had said nothing about #Bluesky, and realised I needed to vote with my feet, not wait for a big company to one day maybe do the right thing. @ItsSheVee all of the above, I started thinking about leaving Twitter a long time ago, Elon was just the last straw. I like that the fediverse isn't centered around content going viral. April 2017. I was an app.net user, and that service shuttered in late March, I tried a few alternatives, pnut and 10centuries, but found my home in Mastodon. Seems forever ago. @ItsSheVee I've never had FB or Twitter accounts. I came here eight or nine months ago to make sure I got some social interaction during the pandemic without the toxicity and privacy invasions of the large commercial platforms. @ItsSheVee Very much so. It's a friendly and positive space, and spending time here feels healthy. I'm grateful to everyone who makes this possible. @ItsSheVee It wasn't because of Elon, but I was part of a previous wave of the so-called "Twitter Refugees" from a few years ago. That being said, Elon is the reason I finally disabled my Twitter accounts for good. Felt a little strange, but it is a relief that it's finally done. @zalasur I'm not ready yet but if things over there get much worse I'll have to consider it @ItsSheVee it was long overdue. I'd looked at Mastodon years ago when the service was starting to spin up in response to equally disappointing bird site news. Got distracted and mostly distanced myself from all social media. Found myself back the last couple years and not enjoying it. Was leaning toward another sabbatical when #TheMuskening occurred and that was enough to push me forward. Mastodon removes the things I hated. Ads, algorithm based feed, and the omnipresent need for impressions. As a very occasional, uninvested and disinterested Twitter user, I had no "fear of what it might become". Putting it another way, I switched so I could still share wordle scores with my wife. i went here because i heard this was a more chill place @ItsSheVee Pure curiosity about what a federated network would look like. As to the Twitter buyout from Elon Musk, I really couldn't care less. Really. @ItsSheVee Arrived long ago after seeing a post about Mastodon on an aggregator and thinking that sounded like something I'd enjoy. Haven't regretted it yet. @ItsSheVee 2, 3, 1 in that order. It doesn't feel correct to have one guy buy the platform & do what he wants with it, & it's data. If you want to see a site without moderation check out 4chan, I'm not interested in being on something like that. Also U've always wanted to join Mastodon since I love FOSS :) @ItsSheVee ,No Moderation Dangerous Over Reach :/ :( Also, I Do NOT Trust #ElonMusk , & Highly An #NPD Sufferer Too With Full Or Partial Triats , & Leans Toxic Right/Far Right CONservatism Values, Ideologies, Extremism, Voices, :/ :( Because mastodon was free (libre) software, also decentralise nature. @ItsSheVee because I don't like big tech algorithms monitoring, predicting, and trying to control my behavior @ItsSheVee Finally got a nudge last year and tried it. When Corona hit, I decided not to log in to Birdsite and instead tried the waters here. Elon was just the straw to make me go delete the account there (planned for years) @slowcyclist I think people being willing to donate to keep the servers running and development going are going to be important as things start to scale. I can imagine they're starting to feel the heat with all of the new users in the last month @ItsSheVee I think Twitter is a really unhealthy site even disregarding Elon. The drama around his acquisition was a good reason as any to move over to Mastodon @ItsSheVee Now Elon drove me back. And I like it! @determinerik That's kind of similar to my own story. It's been really fun learning about everyone's experiences @Butzlabben I wish I could have added more than 4 answers but it's still interesting to know what people will choose if they could only choose one. Very happy to see that such a large portion are just people who appreciate FOSS @ItsSheVee Saw a new opportunity to meet cool people without algorithmic heckery back in 2016. @ItsSheVee I got tired of crypto scammers propaganda, their thousands bots and lies. @ItsSheVee I was impersonated and a friend scammed by the impersonated account, and twitter said they'd done nothing wrong. I can't be social on a service that cares so little about its users. @ItsSheVee I've dabbled with mastodon a couple times over the last several years. Mainly due to loving open source products and the privacy they can afford. I'm tired of every aspect of online social platforms being nothing more than data mines invading our privacy and trying to make a profit from us. I'm here for good now. @ItsSheVee I wanted to find something that is owned collectively and managed democratically @ItsSheVee Had a friend who often complained about not having enough friends. *Real* friends, not numbers on a page. People who 'get' him; 2 talk 2, connect, &hang out. I advised that what both of us should do (since I'm not great at socializing either ^^;; ) is look for spaces where weird/neurodivergent/neuroatypical/awkward people are. Stop trying to fit in where we don't fit, and find the rare spaces where we do. So now I'm here looking. Taking it slow, but. Taking my own advice ffs. :3 @ItsSheVee mine was between Elon and Fear options. For me, they go hand in hand. There was a report a day or so ago in which someone previously banned from birb, who was trying to dox a BLM activist to “take [them] out,” texted the head of Elon’s investment firm inquiring about account reinstatement. This head said the person could have their account back “hopefully soon.” Of course this doesn’t mean it will happen, but I think it was a sign of what they hope to accomplish: no moderation. @ultramagnus_tcv yeah if he has his way with it it's going to become a sewer over there. He has absolutely no concept of what it means to moderate content on a social network. Can't believe he dropped more money than all of us on this website will ever see, combined, on something he doesn't understand. Been here for two years. I came from Gnu Social after two different instances I moved to shut down without notice. Before that I was on Identi.ca. I never really used or liked Zuckerhell or the bird site. The only corporate network I ever used a lot was Quora before it too lost its way in the name of profit. I have a strong preference for small communities that are more tight knit both online and off. They are more real to me and dont hurt my mental health. @MrBuggles I hope that as this continues to grow you'll still be able to have that small community feel! Also Zuckerhell is a new one for me, that's very funny 😂 @ItsSheVee I was looking to see if there were cool, privacy respecting social media platform around and I stumbled upon Mastoson :) couldn’t be happier! I found more than I was hoping for @ItsSheVee @hasani I thought about that after I posted it but it was too late. Either way, it's still interesting to see what people will pick when they have to choose the one that is most important to them @ItsSheVee Understood. For me I would have selected "all of the above" if that was an option 😆 @hasani Definitely a common response! I wanted to do something like that but I was limited to four options 🤷 😆 @ItsSheVee Was fed up with Facebook both personally and ethically. Came to the fediverse for the decentralized nature and self-control of my data and connections. (Never had a twitter account, FWLIW.) @ItsSheVee I was part of the wil weaton event. I'd heard of mastodon long before, but his "okay, I'm off over there" was the catalyst. When he left (let's not go into that), I stayed. @ItsSheVee I followed @bigzaphod here back in 2018 as he moved then and I didn't want to miss out, then stayed because I found a far nicer community than Birdsite! @ItsSheVee A while ago, Twitter got pretty unreliable about supporting its API for third-party clients. I benefit from choosing my own client due to #a11y concerns, but also, I realised how vulnerable it makes one to depend on a company like Twitter, for which I don't matter at all. @modulux I've had a few people mention accessibility being part of it. It makes me happy that open source projects offer more of that for those who need it @ItsSheVee
I don't really remember how I first came to the #Fediverse, but I got hook up by the interoperability between diferent kinds of applications, namely, that from #Mastodon (and now #Friendica) I could commentapps on #GDroid#Peertube videos#Lemmy postsslightly longer story in my introduction @ItsSheVee a bunch of my internet friends signed up during the Tumblr exodus, and I jumped on the bandwagon even though I didn't use Tumblr myself. @ItsSheVee Still hoping to find a place that is as good as Google+ once was. And identi.ca :) I'm still in OVH's cloud (I'll probably change that one day) and depend on my DNS registrar and server (OVH / Afnic, no idea to get rid of that). Also, I previously were on Framasoft's home server. (2/2) @marius851000 I just love that this is an option and it's built into the interface that you can easily switch to a new server if you want/need to @JackDeeth honestly same but it's still fun to see which one people will choose as that which was most motivating for them @ItsSheVee Dislike of centralisation; I didn't want to be the product on sale to advertisers. @ItsSheVee back in 2017 i heard it was full of leftists and lgbt people , so ijoined for the community @ItsSheVee love open source + fear of bird site. also I'm getting really tired of algorithms dictating what I see @ItsSheVee Had to register. @ItsSheVee @ItsSheVee love of open source and federation made me join Mastodon last year (I run my own instance). Elon Musk made me delete my Twitter account last month. @ItsSheVee I joined in November 2019, then forgot about it...took another look when it was getting mentions on other social media...and, well, here I am... @ItsSheVee I got permabanned from Twitter for no reason at all, frankly. (Though I've lately suspected that I might've been because I've been sharing links to my Mastodon profile in a different instance) @katakislives that would be really shitty if true. I've never heard of that happening before, though, and I feel like people share their socials there all the time @ItsSheVee birdsite continually blocking people who complain about misogyny, privilege and (homo, trans)-phobia while dismissing reports concerning tweets containing those things @ItsSheVee The party that I am a member of has its own instance and I decided to try it out when I learned about it. @ItsSheVee I had never gotten into Twitter and @yoz kept singing Mastodon's praises on Facebook so I finally gave in and joined, seeding my follows by following everyone Yoz followed. |
