TIL: Firefox has a cool built-in method for keyboard navigation! ⌨️🦊

Pressing ' (the apostrophe key) opens the "Quick find (links only)" tool. Start typing a part of the thing you want to click, until it's highlighted. Press Enter to confirm.

If there are multiple hits for what you typed, you can cycle with F3.

I think you can get very good and fast with this!

Another tweak: If there's a very unique string close to the thing you want to click, you can press / to open "Quick find" (for all text). Search for the string, then use Tab and Shift-Tab to jump to your thing.

Back in the old days, I used the Vimperator and Pentadactyl extensions for even more keyboard awesomeness, don't know what's the current state of the art there?

But the ' key is… just always there! I wanna practice using it a lot!

@blinry / works similarly to ctrl-f, but if there are multiple occurences then ctrl-f lets you choose which one you want to go to, which is why I generally prefer it

Smoljaguar

@blinry another tip: if ctrl-f is blocked on a website, ctrl-g also works as an equivalent.
One trick I use a lot is * in the address bar to search bookmarks, % to search tabs

@Smoljaguar @blinry Another tip: if a website hijacks ctrl+f, focus the address bar and then press ctrl+f.

@blinry '/' is also a nice shortcut! 👍 websites match their internal search functions to this key so ' seems to be the safer choice.

@blinry there's Tridactyl and Vim Vixen (last updated 3y ago). But ' might replace the former for me, thanks.

@blinry except when it's not. Greetings from nordics layout where it's not.

Oh way vimperator, I remember. Those were the days

@blinry as an old vim user (like forever, I mean 30+ years) I use always / to search. You may be surprised in how many other programs this is an alias for ctrl-F

Its good, aye. I really miss this since switching to a "dead keys" layout. Never remembered the F3 for next, thing though.

EggCess

@blinry That's a cool little tip, thanks!
Unfortunately, it's a little janky with deadkeys, but still works if one hits the first letter of the search term (after ')' twice.

edit: Only if it's a not a character that combines with ' ... dangit

editedit: will have to get used to ' [space] then

@blinry

Nice tip. I am using "Vimium C" to bring the power of VIM shortcuts to Firefox.

@blinry oh, this is awesome! :breaddrool:

:awesome:

@blinry oh what the hell i've been relying on Vimium's link hints features for years and didn't know Firefox had that natively

Ctrl+g also works for cycling between multiple hits 🙂
