The state of search in 2024:

Google: "We threw away decades of search knowledge and Internet indexing and just made an answer up :blobfoxgoogly:"

Bing: "Here's 100 tangentially related pages from 2010 that I only included because your query appears in a tag cloud in the website's footer"

DuckDuckGo: "Here are the Bing results, only with ✨privacy✨"

Reddit: (this user has deleted their entire post history using PowerDeleteMyShit. Fuck /u/Spez)

Yahoo: "Oh thank god, someone's actually using our search engine! No, we're not just Bing!" *frantically trying to cover up the giant Bing sticker* "NO DON'T GO TO GOOGLE!!!!"

Yandex: "Here are all of the Russian-owned resources on this topic. Only Russian sources are trustworthy. Everything else is fake ne—I MEAN, misinformation"

Kagi: "We'll give you what Google used to give you for free, for the low low price of $10/month!"

Ask.com: [hoarse screaming and clawing noises can be heard from the ground beneath a headstone that says "Here lies Jeeves: 1996-2006"]

@aires apparently you can't crawl the web to index it unless you are google or bing because of cloudflare (the Nazi proxy) seirdy.one/posts/2021/03/10/se

Aires

@ionizedgirl Totally cool and normal that a proxy can choose which search engines get to index which websites :blobfoxfacepalm:

ionizedGirl

@aires it not just "a proxy" though, its the proxy that publically regretted ending their business dealing with imprisoned american nazi weev and his nazi organization stormfront

Kite

@aires i can add one onto that! DuckDuckGo map directions (which appears to just be Apple Maps?!) don't include biking or transit directions! i dont know if they ever did, im just trying to De-corpo my life more.

Alexia :neocat_flag_trans:

@kite @aires

DDG has indeed partnered with Apple to insert a basic version of Apple Maps

standev

@kite @aires that’s odd, because Apple Maps includes both of those.

Wayne Werner

@kite @aires might try openstreetmaps if you haven't

Kite

@mcSlibinas oh thanks, i'll give it a peek!

CaveDave

@kite @aires biking and transit? What are you? Some kind of poor European?!

Kite

@engravecavedave
lol i thought it was the Yankees that hated public transit, everyone else uses bullet-trains to get their groceries right? :thonkhappy:

It's pretty, but is it art?

@aires
Lycos: *furiously urinates on floor* NO OPTIONS. YOU GET WHAT YOU GET

dotnet00

@aires@tiggi.es tbf $10/mo isn't too bad for more customizable Google with no tracking.

Bungler
@aires I've been experimenting with using Marginalia (https://search.marginalia.nu/) on & off for a while now & while it still feels lacking it does manage to net some interesting out-of-the-way hits from time to time.
datenritter

@aires You forgot YaCy. es.wikipedia.org/wiki/YaCy

I'd love to make a joke about it, but my experiences with it are way in the past. It was hard to install but nice to have. Your personal search engine, index based on what you actually looked at. Ate all your bandwidth to crawl websites.

Captain of the SS El Faro

@datenritter @aires finally something gigabit fibre is actually good for, installing now(if I can)

datenritter

@bangskij Please try. I heard it has some problems and I'd love to know if it's doable. @aires

Captain of the SS El Faro

@datenritter @aires Downloaded, installed, had to manually install Java, now it's running, I guess it'll need some time to do indexing, I'm not very techie. I'll leave it till tomorrow and then try some searching.

datenritter

@bangskij Nice. Maybe I'll give it another try. Do you see some kind of progress indicator in the web interface? @aires

Captain of the SS El Faro

@datenritter @aires there's this, looks like I gotta figure out how to open a port for full functionality

Captain of the SS El Faro

@datenritter @aires actually there's a great many settings and things in here. Was hoping for more automagic but I'll figure it out

hexmode

@datenritter @aires Just installed via docker and then pulled it up on localhost:8090. It found results for tech stuff right away. Some other results we disapppointing, but its a good start.

The Doctor

@datenritter @aires Still using it over here. No bandwidth to join the DHT, unfortunately.

@aires Searxng: "A little bit of everything, all of the time!"

@pandro @aires but mostly errors from the more interesting engines :blob_help:

awooo :autism:🏴‍☠️🐾⎇

@aires The whole Reddit thing still makes me really angry, it was basically the last usable search engine we had left....

Kay Ohtie, Bat-Yote!

@awooo @aires I'm angry at reddit, and at the time I supported it, but it's increasingly hard to support the deletes folks did when there's a ton of things that may not be found elsewhere like that. Like I get it, I'm being first world about it to an extent, but I feel like almost more harm was done with the backlash than reddit itself suffered. :<

awooo :autism:🏴‍☠️🐾⎇

@KayOhtie @aires I guess it is their right, and I don't want to see these attempts to make the internet worse go unpunished, but yeah, it sucks mostly because we don't have any other place to go right now, and search engine~~s~~ (let's not fool ourselves) are continuing their decline

We need better search engines, but we're not getting them, or at least without a paywall and a creepy owner behind it...

skaphle

@awooo @aires Ironically, reddit search was awful. I used to use startpage with "site:reddit.com"

awooo :autism:🏴‍☠️🐾⎇

@skaphle @aires Yeah, I always used it as an addon to a regular search engine to weed out all the SEO spam, now it just leads to dead comments :/

skaphle

@awooo @aires I deleted all my comments too. I don't want to feed AI.

James 🌈💜

@aires Ooh. I can weigh in on this one!

I started writing my own search engine and crawler. The index is uselessly small right now, but it prioritises written content and small websites.

⁂ Justin (StayGrounded.online)

@aires Imma be that guy and point out that Google never actually gave results away for free.

T L Holaday

@JustinH @aires I am glad you did point it out, because “… what Google gave you in exchange for tracking consent” would provoke thought.

Codhisattva

@JustinH @aires I’m old enough to remember when Google neither tracked nor sold ads.

can

@aires If you can afford it, it makes sense to pay for stuff. I think Kagi has been doing a great job so far, let’s how it goes 🤞

xangoh

@can @aires "I don't know what you're all complaining about, I'm doing just fine. Sucks to be poor I guess"

can

@xangoh @aires good job at taking my comment and interpreting it in the most nefarious way possible.

can

@miah @xangoh @aires interesting. Didnt know many of these things. But what does POS mean? Which search engine are you using?

DELETED

@xangoh @aires Well that was productive and useful. Are you having a bad day or are you just always like this?

Pelle Wessman

@aires And:

@Mojeek: We’re a European company that are actually crawling and building our own search index – we are everything that DuckDuckGo claims to be and more – we even spearhead an anti-AI extension to website crawling settings to prove it

CONFIG.SYS

@voxpelli @aires @Mojeek I really want to like Mojeek, if only because it's so fast, but the quality of the results is so weird.

Maybe I just need to search on it differently, place more stuff in quotes or something?

Zsolt

@loadhigh @voxpelli @aires @Mojeek i too want to like Mojeek, but the image search is just, not good.

Nina Felwitch :v_trans:

@ElementalEcho Which is just Bing again. And Google since 2023.

Nina Felwitch :v_trans:

@ElementalEcho Pretty much all search engines are providing results either via Bing or Google, or both.

fraggle

@aires i tried using ask.com recently out of morbid curiosity and it is comically bad. Like so bad I don't know why they even bother. look at this

moondog548

@aires
That's why if Alta Vista doesn't have the answer for me, I don't need it!
@TinaStormcaller

ChrisR

@davew @moondog548 @aires @TinaStormcaller It's true, we did use Alta Vista... and suffered for it, too. Then this wonderful clean quick search engine came along that produced the results you wanted (and nothing else except a doodle) in a tenth of the time it used to take Alta Vista to load! And for a brief period, all was well, and big tech would Do No Evil... ;-)

mcSlibinas

@aires it's a sad story, because your'e right. 100% true! 😭

Golden Bunny of Destiny 🕯🇺🇦

@aires We need a Wikipedia model for search. Depending on commercial interests was always a trap waiting for the opportune moment.

@aires@tiggi.es Mojeek: We do just search and have no ties to big tech. Anyways, would you like to try our LLM-generated summaries of search results? Don't worry: it's not using Microsoft ChatGPT or Google Gemini. It's instead using a fully FOSS model that can run locally on a desktop, without the massive energy consumption of Microsoft ChatGPT. And the best part is the text it outputs is just as accurate as Microsoft ChatGPT!

What's that? You're telling us that the stuff it's spewing is total nonsense? Good news: we added a feature where it "cites" its "sources" so you can check for yourself. The citations are almost as accurate as the main text it outputs!

@backtoanalog @aires Ecosia just wraps Bing (and maybe Google too?)

Isabel

@aires I'm old enough to remember Ask Jeeves. That makes me very old, damn 😂 😭

Ecstatic Cling

@aires I propose we start a crowdsourced search service that consists of just asking people on social media for recommendations.

Anyone know of a search engine like this?

Viraptor

@ecstaticcling @aires that's kind of what aardvark was. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aardvark
Killed by Google of course, because it was actually kind of useful.

Makoto

@viraptor @ecstaticcling @aires sounds really nice. if it works so great, why didn't anyone else build another one?

Viraptor

@alchemicacht @ecstaticcling @aires Quora did. But now that Quora is almost unusable, maybe someone can try again.

Qybat

@aires Google has to throw out their old algorithms because the Web has been SEOed to fuck, and most of what Google was finding were auto-generated fake review sites with affiliate links. They are going all in on AI because it's all they have left. And it won't work, because the spammers are already cranking up their own generative sludge farms

Su-Shee

@aires me: grep through the bookmarks and bookmarked open tab collection from a firefox from an old home dir backup from 15 years ago "ah I knew I had this somewhere!"

Lycos: hey, how'ya been? It's been a while, hasn't it? Well, here's some perfectly reasonable search results without AI nonsense. Y'all come back again soon. Hey, did you know I still run this cool thing called angelfire.lycos.com?

Bob

@aires @cstross

Ask.com still exists?! I didn't know that.

silentw

@aires there's also Lycos, which is surprisingly good now.

John Wilson

@aires mojeek.com: what would be third or fourth place in 2008 is miles better than current Google/Bing. Not great at tech topics, but you’ll probably get at least three interesting links in the first page of results

@aires

You forgot @mojeek :) The only european searchmachine with it's own index.

It means it's 100% not using google, bing, yahoo or any other american corporate crap.

You're welcome.

@aires Kagi allows you to family share with 5 more people for family price $20... Still terrible tho.

Nick Stevens Graphics

@aires

Well, personally I use Yandex image search a LOT. Particularly reverse image search.

The web search still sucks though...

KarelGardas

@aires And what about YaCy? Oh, let me try: after hours of scrapping and hours of indexing you basically hit a wall of their architecture and it does not scale enough for what you would like to search for (or index). Uhm.

jadedctrl :programo:
@aires Kagi: Bing with spice, at a price. :gutkato_dikfingro_supren:
Geraint

@aires For a while, it looked like the internet and modern (old Google) search engines were going to make librarians and curated databases redundant. But now, the opposite is true.

If you want information related to electronic engineering, then the search engine at xplore.ieee.com will still find what your are looking for.

There are similar databases for all fields of knowledge, if you know the ones to use; and librarians know what they are.

Electronic libraries staffed by humans FTW

Mike But Slightly Frosty ❄️⛄

@aires Don't forget startpage, which is basically the duckduckgo answer, but minus bing and plus google.

MaxTheFox

@aires @mynameistillian One thing Yandex is good for is that its image search is way more competent than Google's ever was. It's weird.

lachlan but spooky

@aires TIL I learned about Kagi. I will admit, I'm very curious.

@aires
SearxNG
github.com/searxng/searxng

It's painless to install on your own pc with linux. You can tell it which engines you like (or hate) and how to weight them. And it may also search your local joplin notes and display them along with the rest of the results.
It's fast and better.
Why use any other proxy, but your own?

Kit

@aires I've been told that if you dig into Kagi's technical details, it's just Google.

@aires perplexity.ai: „we never had decades of search knowledge and try really hard to make up a slightly less made up answer then Google“ ;)

@aires I started using Lycos on my phone, it's a bit like the 90s: minimal design, no preview, no images, no ads and I always have a useful result on the first page.

@aires Yandex is search engine russians made themselves, and it focuses more on cyrylic part if the internet, but damn noone is better at obscure electronic stuff. I was searching google and ddg for pinout of a part for hour or so, i've checked yandex and it was on top, not only this pinout, i've got schematics with big watermark saying that this document is confidential.

dynamic

@aires

Whenever I see variations on this, I feel like we need to start including Wikipedia on the list of search engines. It isn't one, but sometimes it feels like we're getting to a place where it will be the best tool for actually finding the link you want.

Derek W. Wade

I've been enjoying Qwant (qwant.com). Feels a bit like pre-2010 Google. Bang, useful results with minimal corporate marketing.
