New_ Public is starting a project on hyperlocal online communities -- neighborhoods, towns, that kind
of thing.
I'd be in, if something like this existed in my neighborhood, and is better than Nextdoor!

@andresmh @wearenew_public This is I think why good moderation and community management are such essential skills to have to make those groups effective. @J12t @wearenew_public agree. Surprisingly, some of the best neighborhood groups are on FB Groups. For example, the Buy Nothing <insert location> ones. FB Groups have decent moderation tools, and good moderation practices have been passed from group to group. But then the issue is that you have to use Facebook. @J12t @wearenew_public cc @dangillmor (per yesterday’s toot) - check out the comments for other recommendations too @J12t @wearenew_public Given that we're in a world where FB and NextDoor and other things exist, it's hard for me to imagine a new thing displacing them, no matter how good the software and the culture it embodies. But maybe it could wrap them, and thus provide something better - for those who want it right away - while offering a smooth upgrade path for people in the legacy services? @judell @wearenew_public IMHO there's a lot "non-consumption" like me technically having an account on Nextdoor, but practically never using it. Those like me are quite ready being users of something better. @J12t @wearenew_public I'm also a Nextdoor member but non-user. I'm lucky to be able to outsource the actual use of it to my wife! > Those like me are quite ready being users of something better. There are very few of us, though, very many will remain on FB/Nextdoor/etc. That's why I wonder about a strategy that wraps those (what I optimistically consider legacy) apps, vs aiming to outright replace them. |
@J12t @wearenew_public same here. That said, the problem with Nextdoor is partly about the platform but mostly about the neighbors 😅
