Little BTS video from the  Archive: At WWDC 2010, they had a visualization showing the activity of the 50K most popular App Store apps.

As apps are downloaded, their data is coalesced via an XML feed every five minutes. That data is then passed to an OpenCL kernel, which drives the animation and drops the icon into a column in the grid based on icon color. Quartz Composer renders the final synchronized output.
