For *non-technical people* trying to de-Google, what are some good Google product alternatives that you don't have to self-host?

I'll start with Ente, which is a pretty good replacement for Google Photos, and Fastmail, which is a good replacement for Gmail and Calendar.

@publiclewdness hmm a lot of this is a bit much for non-technical people.

Can buy devices with alternative operating systems already installed.

As for the rest is setting up an account with Tuta any different than one with Gmail ?

F-droid is a download away and doesn't need an account.

The only real work with XMPP and the like is choosing a server, same for Nextcloud.

At the end of the day the user who puts in no effort gets nothing out of it.

@jcrabapple @publiclewdness Indeed it is. DeGoogling takes work, it's inconvenient, and you must have the privileges of wealth, time, and technical knowledge. What we really need is across the board data protection regulation that is enforced with meaningful consequences for Big Tech.

I don't see regulation as any solution. Government is only good for stealing people's money and limiting freedom. Not to mention that I prefer to support the people and companies that make devices and software like this of their own volition rather than because the government made them. I don't need regulation when I have my own determination and common sense. I do my own research because privacy and security matter to me. For most people the truth is they will never deGoogle for no reason other than they simply don't care.

@publiclewdness @jcrabapple I guarantee that you wouldn't want an unregulated food supply, water supply, or an unregulated pharmacy. Regulation works.

Have you seen the state of the food, water and pharma in many places even with govt regulations ? Companies violate the hell out of laws and all the govt does is fine them less money than they made screwing people over by breaking the laws all the while the govt takes bribes from them in the form of lobbying. Furthermore you don't get to decide what I want or don't want.

thestrangelet :fedora:

@publiclewdness @jcrabapple Yes, I have, generally it's safe other than some well publicised outliers like Flint.

@publiclewdness @jcrabapple Anyway, it's cool, just sharing my opinion, like you. We don't have to agree or discuss further.

I’ll second Fastmail as a great Gmail and Calendar replacement. DuckDuckGo is a good search engine replacement. Open Street Map is a suitable Google Maps alternative

I’m still fascinated by all of the different things you can do on Disroot

I use their Cryptpad to manage my Hoosier Social documents, like my expense tracking spreadsheet. Small donation though Librapay makes me feel good about it.

@jcrabapple carnet for note taking, tasks.org for tasks & reminders, etar with davx5 sync for calendar & contacts, proton mail..

@dyedbird Good recommendations for people on fedi, but even some of that is a bit difficult for non-technical people.

@jcrabapple true I have started degoogling on mobile 2-3 years ago. It takes research and persistence but for non technical people I'd recommend buying a device flashed with CalyxOS or iodeOS and slowly starting with a second device...

@jcrabapple I've moved most of me and my family's things to Proton nowadays (mail, calendar, password manager, occasional VPN use, and cloud storage), I use Firefox for my browser, Tidal for music streaming, and Telegram/Signal for the majority of my chats. I've been looking at ente for photos but it's hard to justify yet another subscription.

Micah Ilbery :neofox_cofe:

@jcrabapple while I am fairly techy, I don't enjoy fiddling with those things and don't want to be tech support for my family who are not techy. So I'm always looking for good privacy respecting but easy to use and convenient services and apps to replace the not so privacy respecting stuff.

@micah@ilbery.family @jcrabapple@dmv.community If @protonprivacy@mastodon.social comes out with a photo service that can compare to G Photos it would make it much easier to recommend to almost anyone I know as a complete G alternative. I know there's #Ente, like you said it's another subscription, and there's #Immich, as much as I like it most people don't know how or want to maintain a server.
