Just confirmed that latest icons with the updated cursor names no longer crash Mutter 14, so 🤞OS 8 dailies should be bootable again tomorrow. Unless there’s some new problem 😂 New base cursor design was merged in. Shoutouts to new contributor William for getting the ball rolling, helping refine these styles, and coming up with these great color wheel design for the waiting cursor https://github.com/wpkelso I have several branches out that will result in basically a completely redrawn cursor theme, so excited waiting on reviews for those. Merged in @davidmhewitt’s branch for the screenshot and color picker portals! So that’s exciting Submitted a branch for Files to use the wallpaper portal and for multi-GPU support in the Dock 🚀 Really whittling down the OS 8 project board. I’m really still not sure why dailies aren’t booting, but doing what I can until we can figure it out Dailies are booting again thanks to @davidmhewitt! Meanwhile I’m working on patches, the OS 8 Flatpak runtime, getting things into a releasable state, etc. Blog post likely coming at you tomorrow? Got a fresh install of OS 8 daily on my main machine and I am excitedly cranking out some stuff today! Pushed a couple branches to fix regressions in Desktop settings. And added a few things to the OS 8 project board Releasing Granite 7.5.0 today (that’s right because no major API break), likely Stylesheet 8, and preparing release notes for Icons 8. We actually did a ton for Icons 8! The release notes and list of fixed issues is fat. And then Platform 8 release will follow soon after that. Granite, Stylesheet, and Icons are all released. Platform 8 is also released. The Sdk and Runtime are both built. Now building docker containers. I have branches staged for updating all our flatpaks to the new platform Also I have a branch out for adding FlatHub by default in OS 8 Haha docker build failed so maybe I’m too early lol. Once the platform is for sure published in our remote I’ll re-trigger that Platform 8 docker containers are built and we’re getting all our flatpaks updated, including GNOME Web 46! While working on Installer GTK4 porting, might as well make this view more responsive :) This is a daunting task 😬 https://github.com/orgs/elementary/projects/128/views/1?pane=issue&itemId=62308779 Looking for new wallpapers for the new default. Proposed a couple. Feel free to add 👍 👎 reactions :) https://github.com/elementary/wallpapers/pull/184 If you had to pick one of the three wallpapers above for OS 8 default which would it be? (see previous post) I love that @micah asked for this edit. Spot the difference! https://github.com/elementary/wallpapers/pull/185/commits/5159b0f3f9f84d0dda3dd44bd7bddce4480a10c8 Not an actual greeter screenshot because that takes more effort, but I proposed a branch for big, thick clock 🥵 My fun thing for today was revisiting drawing wallpaper previews in appearance settings. It's resizable, works with RTL, can handle if you use a solid color background, and can handle when you have a different wallpaper preference for dark and light mode (currently only way to set that is in dconf) I think that looks quite a bit nicer and more modern, don't you? https://github.com/elementary/switchboard-plug-pantheon-shell/pull/400 Yeah I think that makes a lot more sense and there's some nice visual feedback https://github.com/elementary/switchboard-plug-pantheon-shell/pull/401 Ignore all my fucking cables please. Lock Screen looking so good for OS 8! Major shoutouts and congrats to @leolost and @tintou who just merged the initial implementation of our Wayland shell protocol! https://github.com/elementary/gala/pull/1906 This means Gala can now position panels and docks under Wayland including with hide modes! Very exciting stuff. This is like the major piece for our Wayland session 🥳 🎉 Working more today on Wayland session. Merged some branches from @leolost, did a branch to redo shadows in Gala since we can’t use Gtk.StyleContext there without causing a crash. Also proposed a branch to update System Settings for hide modes in the new Dock. Should be able to test it yourself within the next couple days :) Going through old dock issue reports now and a number of these are closed by the new hide modes being in Gala. One cool thing is you can now unhide the dock along the entire display edge, which is nice since you can’t see where it is haha And the shadows branch in Gala was merged, so if you’re in early access you should be able to choose the Wayland session from the little gear menu on the Lock Screen and run Wayland and test the new Dock starting today! Anyways I’ve been running Wayland now and although there are still a number of things that are broken, Orca is not one of them. The screen reader does totally work at least in my limited testing Merging lots of little bug fix branches, but also @leolost implemented launching dock items with Super + [1-9] which was hotly requested. The new Dock is turning out really great :) We also merged the branches to add driver management to system settings and completely remove PackageKit from AppCenter. So that’s also big and exciting and will needs lots of testing 🎉 I realized we're using "this device" or "your computer" in a bunch of places, but you give your device a name during Initial Setup, so why not call your device by name? Working on this month’s blog post. There’s actually like a lot of big things here. Including some OS 7 updates! If you had to describe the X11 session to someone who has no technical knowledge (and no interest), you would best describe it as: If you had to describe the Wayland session to someone who has no technical knowledge (and no interest), you would best describe it as: I think the only thing left for me to do is learn the new constraint based layouts and then Installer is ported to GTK4! The only thing that’s not working is the partition bars since size allocate went away. Constraint layouts seems like the best way to do this in modern GTK I think Quick little fun branch to revamp the links we show on the OS info page https://github.com/elementary/switchboard-plug-about/pull/325 I think I just solved the last little thing we need to ship Photos as Flatpak? Still testing, but everything seems to be working Photos 8 is now available as a Flatpak on AppCenter! 🎉 http://flatpak.elementary.io/repo/appstream/io.elementary.photos.flatpakref Accomplished a lot in terms of cleaning up AppCenter after the PackageKit removal. Cleared out several layers of abstraction. Might be some memory usage savings. It’s definitely easier to understand how things fit together. Dropped support for AppStream older than 1.0. Trying to make things faster and more stable Shoutouts to @colinkiama for landing the port to Hdy.TabBar in Code! This is a pretty big piece of Gtk4 porting prep so that’s very exciting https://github.com/elementary/code/pull/1424 Shoutouts to @leolost for landing another new portal! Dude is cookin’. We now have the screencast portal and also an approval dialog for the system shortcut inhibit API I also finally have a branch proposed for pages in AppCenter to draw their own headers. This is going to open up more cool design possibilities https://github.com/elementary/appcenter/pull/2170 Shoutouts to @zersiax for taking a look at OS 8 today and showing just how much we have to do to be ready for blind folks. Definitely got humbled big time! But I feel like I learned a lot and have a lot of great new action items. Already proposed a couple branches and made a couple other works in progress branches. There’s some easy fixes we can definitely do right away and some things that might need more careful work. But overall I’m very grateful for the insight! Submitted several branches to improve screen reader a11y in Granite, System Settings, and elsewhere. Also something fun: https://github.com/elementary/appcenter/pull/2178 Shoutouts @alice for taking the time to follow up on accent colors support in Pantheon and to make sure not only that Adwaita apps are working here but that Granite apps will work there. She’s always been great about reaching out and building bridges so lots of appreciation 🩷 Also @leolost woke up and decided to make AppCenter load WAY faster and is also working on making search faster. So that’s awesome I got some good cleanups and fixes merged into AppCenter today as well. Making good moves! Some more design work on app info pages in AppCenter. This time revisiting links. A bit GNOME Software inspired I have this month’s blog post outlined and have started to flesh out each part but I might chill today since it’s technically a holiday. Hang tight! I have about 20 more releases to prepare on the OS 8 project board and then we can start building RCs. Almost every set of release notes has the line, “improved screen reader accessibility” which is pretty cool. Need to take lots of screenshots @lenemter and @leolost are doing some nice cleanups in gala to reduce memory usage, improve performance, etc. Getting close! Just casually rewriting navigation in onboarding to fix keyboard and screen reader a11y. This was a SHOWSTOPPER when @zersiax took a look at elementary OS, so the next time he gives it a try I want it to be ✨ perfect ✨ I just have like 2 or 3 releases to prepare besides the panel and all the indicators and then that’s done. Still have a couple OS patches to fix up and gotta get plank back in for X11 session. So we can build RCs like really soon. Maybe next week? We’ll see Also did a branch to rewrite settings dialog in Code and make it more screen reader accessible https://github.com/elementary/code/pull/1449 Camera GTK4 port is up for review now! Fixed the last little thing thanks to help from Ryo! https://github.com/elementary/camera/pull/200 Here's a picture I took from my StarLite just now of Rosie doing her thing. It's still not like a quality photo, but one step at a time! |
