A sincere tip for longtime fediverse people who would like their friends to stick around here longer than a week:

If you're on Mastodon or Hometown, you can click the "bell" icon in the profile of someone you follow. This will make it so that every time they post, it will appear in your notifications like an "@". I am enabling this temporarily for friends so that I remember to interact with them. This is important for making this place feel more lively and helps people stick around!

@darius I had no idea and had never noticed that bell!

christa

@darius oooh this is a good tip, especially since my feeds are a lot more active than usual and I haven’t figured out how to manage them yet

Jessica Hammer

@darius I love that the bell icon was grayed out as "sensitive content."

Darius Kazemi

@hammerj Ohh that's my bad, I marked it as sensitive by accident

Григорий Клюшников

I had an idea for Smithereen to send email notifications every day or week or whatever with the summary of what happened over that period. Opt-in of course and only sent if you don't visit for X days.

@darius I've been here for five years and never knew this.

swansinflight :excuseme:

@ajroach42 @darius I think it’s pretty new? Mind you I use a phone app mostly so 🤷‍♂️

Darius Kazemi

@MrsMouse this is on 3.4.6 for me. You have to be following someone for this to appear.

Mrs Mouse :verified: :queer:

@darius yea, I got 3.5 and am not seeing it... time to rake a bunch I guess.

Gina

@darius oh wow I didn't even know this and I've been here for 3 years. 🤯

@darius Oh hey. This is super useful because yeah, I feel like I miss a lot of the posts my friends make even though I'm on here pretty often, unless I go to their profiles specifically but then I'm often interacting weeks after the fact xD

stefan 🙌

@darius this is great. I've used mobile notifications to great effect on twitter as well.

K

@darius It seems like the app UI that I'm using doesn't allow this, but I appreciate your post, hopefully I can get it to go through the browser :)

Neovagenesis Evangelion

@darius hi Darius!! I'm excited to be on here again :)

Samuel Roland

@darius
I personally do the opposite. I enable the bell for everyone I follow, and finally, if the person "spams" my timeline too much (in the sense of too many things that don't interest me), I disable the bell.

Photorat

@darius
I don't see a bell (I'm on the website).

Aileen

@darius I've been here since 2018, but I never noticed that before. What a very useful tip, thank you!

yr

@darius that's right. like, subscribe, and hit that bell

lex

@darius This sounds like a great idea. I’m putting real effort into replying rather than lurking as well. who should I be following?

Darius Kazemi

@lex I hope to put out some follow recommendations later this week

@darius

alas, works on another instance for me where I use it gladly, but not on toot.cat

not sure if it's a limitation of glitch-soc, of the version of g-s being old, of some toot.cat admin setting, or what

Sami C

@darius I am actually just using the app for the first time. Still going around blindly.

@darius Your tip is absolutely brilliant! Than you!

@darius This is indeed a wonderful feature and helps me with spending less time on the web and still getting updates I find valuable/interesting. I scroll through timelines less and less and just look at the notifications by people I follow. I try to post less, but with a bit more effort, so that when people put on notifications on my profile they only see something once in a while.

I still doubt whether to use a different account for nonprofessional things like running pictures..?

wizzwizz4

@darius @feditips In case you're not aware, this is a good one.

Fedi.Tips 🎄

@wizzwizz4 @darius

Yes :) Already mentioned a while ago and boosted this post last night! 👍

pandora

@feditips @darius

I've set the "bell" flag for a few accounts now and it's working fine when they post a new toot, but I don't get any notification when these accounts reply to another toot.
Is there any way to be informed about replies as well?

Darius Kazemi

reposting this with every influx of new users

Earthling of the Rhine

@darius I ended up putting people I liked the most in a list, and then pinned the list to my home page. But I like the bell/notifications method too!

Darius Kazemi

@amikigu I think lists are the better long term solution -- this one is more the kind of thing where you are *definitely* not going to forget them but only makes sense as a temporary measure

Adam Dalliance

@darius Or lists! You can also make a newbies-to-babysit list and create a new column to watch :)

DELETED

@darius "SMASH THAT FOLLOW BUTTON AND HIT THE BELL"

Activist

@strypey @darius Is this purely a client feature? If you trigger the bell from the stock GUI web app then return to your 3rd party client, will the posts still make it to your notifications?

Ji Fu
@strypey @darius @aktivismoEstasMiaLuo It should, it's a server side setting and the server feeds your notification
Giselle

@darius Thanks very much for this! I either didn't know of this functionality or didn't realise it would be useful for this purpose. In any case, thank you!
I will go off and do that now...

Scott Jenson

@darius Great tip but in practice quite hard:
1) I have to open a separate page for everyone I currently follow
2) The UX is far too subtle, the bell icon changes from grey to light purple. Make it bolder, fill it in solid, easy fix, UX win.

Darius Kazemi

@scottjenson I would not recommend doing this for everyone you follow! Just a handful of newbies who you feel like could use the engagement and encouragement. Fully agree on the color thing

Scott Jenson

@darius Ah, interesting. Sorry for the noob question, but isn't the point of following people on different servers to get them to show up in my timeline? I understood you to mean that I HAD to tap the bell for them to show up. Misunderstanding?

Ji Fu
@darius @scottjenson more reasons to join (or migrate to?) #Friendica! This is way easier here, and you can customize the colors, or change themes altogether, of your user interface, regardless of the default set by the instance administrator.
