I remember one of the things that motivated me to look into the state of decentralized social media (and ultimately begin working on Mastodon) in 2016 were talks that a controversial billionaire might buy Twitter.

@Gargron it was already a dumpster fire by then and hasn't innovated or improved much since then. Could have been interesting had it been bought. Might be interesting if it can be bought now.

Regardless, thank you for you work on this amazing project. This is certainly better.

@Gargron IMHO, Twitter was already in the toilet by 2016. I'd been on for 5 years with no issues when the place suddenly turned into a rat's nest of fascists, trolls, bots, clueless celebrities, spammers and Russiagaters.

I couldn't have discovered Mastodon soon enough, especially after getting this little love note from Twitter in early '18:

@Gargron what if the billionaire gives a number that makes you billionaire will you sell Mastadon? Herr

@Gargron hahahha so true. All the mess he is doing right now only makes mastodon even stronger #twitter #elonmusk #elon #musk #tesla #internet #mastodon

@Gargron I am very suspicios of Elon. He did brick Rich Rebuilds Tesla after he he fixed it from a flooded write-off.

If his goal is to move the world to sustainable energy, then why would he not be happy with someone fixing a written off Tesla.

He is putting out all these vehicles into the world, that he can track, shut down and soon all these cars will drive themselves.

His companies are a social creditors dream. It's so good that you have created social media that is not subject to central authority.

@Gargron Ha! You gave yourself away, I guess. Are you the one "leaking" these rumors in order to boost mastodon and the fediverse? 😁

dan

@Gargron these days, social media has become a mess

@Gargron Twitter is and has been a cesspool for a long long time, it's only going to get worse.

I appreciate your efforts, thanks for Mastodon.

@Gargron hello sir, quick question does the IOS App for Mastodon have any plans to adopt a built in translate button? Such a thing could help convince more people to switch over

Francois Charih

@Gargron This app looks pretty sweet. I look forward to better moderated discussion!

RadicalR

@Gargron Made a good call there. Let's just hope that this site doesn't devolve into a hellhole like Twitter. :(

@Gargron Unfortunately, he just did. That is why I came over here.

Comrade Peter Parker

@Gargron still learning, but this feels neat. I also appreciate all the clients available on iOS.

@Gargron Genuinely odd motivation considering every major social media platform was already owned by the super rich, but thankful for Mastodon regardless.

@Gargron funny to think this was 2016. If I would’ve stuck around Mastodon more after that, I would’ve saved myself much mental anguish.

tsadilas

@Gargron exactly. Is time for mastodom to thrive

MichaelSD

@Gargron Is it not strange that nearly all tech "stars" nowadays have psychological issues? It is nice that they can succeed in the society, but I doubt that I approve the tendency. Having someone with ASD deciding what is socialy acceptable is laughable.

Jai Alai Guy

@Gargron Prophetic! Now, do you have the winning numbers for the next Powerball Lottery drawing? Please and thank you.

Christian Kramp

@Gargron Maybe I should revive my idea to do a similar approach for Facebook. You have done a great job here. Very inspiring.
