I remember one of the things that motivated me to look into the state of decentralized social media (and ultimately begin working on Mastodon) in 2016 were talks that a controversial billionaire might buy Twitter.

@Gargron IMHO, Twitter was already in the toilet by 2016. I'd been on for 5 years with no issues when the place suddenly turned into a rat's nest of fascists, trolls, bots, clueless celebrities, spammers and Russiagaters. I couldn't have discovered Mastodon soon enough, especially after getting this little love note from Twitter in early '18: @Gargron Ha! You gave yourself away, I guess. Are you the one "leaking" these rumors in order to boost mastodon and the fediverse? 😁 @Gargron hello sir, quick question does the IOS App for Mastodon have any plans to adopt a built in translate button? Such a thing could help convince more people to switch over @Gargron This app looks pretty sweet. I look forward to better moderated discussion! @Gargron still learning, but this feels neat. I also appreciate all the clients available on iOS. @Gargron it is amazing at how technology companies change. #ElonMuskBuyTwitter #elonmusk #elonmusktwitter @Gargron Prophetic! Now, do you have the winning numbers for the next Powerball Lottery drawing? Please and thank you. @Gargron Maybe I should revive my idea to do a similar approach for Facebook. You have done a great job here. Very inspiring. |
@Gargron it was already a dumpster fire by then and hasn't innovated or improved much since then. Could have been interesting had it been bought. Might be interesting if it can be bought now.
Regardless, thank you for you work on this amazing project. This is certainly better.
