Well what a night it was...
I didn't expect very much since Munich is quite far south, but what unfolded surpassed our wildest expectations!
It took me a while to edit these images, in total I took more than 2000, but that also means there are some timelapses waiting to be processed :)

The large dishes belong to an old satellite ground station in Raisting, near Ammersee in southern Bavaria that was built in the 1960 and is still operating to this day.

And in case you missed them last night, tonight is another great chance for Europe. The forecast is not quite as good as yesterday's crazyness, but it should still reach down to mid latitudes once darkness starts.

@stim3on Beautiful pics. What a phenomenon. Around what time should one head outdoors to see this? I'm in Cologne and fear light pollution will obscure everything.

Simeon Schmauß

@tobie1 you'll want to wait until astronomical twilight starts which is around 22:43 in Cologne.

Unobstructed Northern horizon is important and the less light pollution in that direction the better.
It might be worth driving a little outside the city if you can manage.

@stim3on
These are truly beautiful images! Just amazing that you had such a display so far south.

Including the satellite dish is very effective, I find!

We had cloud cover here, alas. But maybe tonight...

@tom30519 Thanks Tom, it was a night worth remembering.
I wish you good luck tonight, though it looks like we might get clouded out instead :)
Some interesting whisky cirrus clouds are in the north right now.

@stim3on@fosstodon.org wish I'd got my camera out, but I am grateful for all the images here - these in particular are awesome 👌

@stim3on@fosstodon.org Great shots! Could you really see these colours from your own eyes or are they due to the long exposure? Impressive.

@stim3on I have seen them in Montréal, which is quite a bit south. It’s almost halfway between the North Pole and the equator.

It was an amazing show that nature is giving us.
