Truncated email from the university:

Beginning yesterday, New School student protesters have been blocking the entrance to Kerrey Hall to force the university to divest from certain companies. Despite negotiations, the protesters would not budge.

We've been patient, allowing an encampment in the University Center as long as it didn't interfere with access to facilities. Two weeks ago, an agreement was reached for protesters to move their demonstration, but it was violated within 24 hours.

Yesterday, we offered another meeting with the Investment Committee, which the students declined, even though a meeting date was set.

Given the refusal to allow access to university facilities, I've asked the NYPD to clear the affected areas. It is a sad day for our community, committed to free speech.

My decision is based on conduct and safety, not speech. The New School remains committed to peaceful demonstration, but cannot risk the safety of its community.
