Matrix might not be _completely_ insufferable if they shut down matrix.org and made everyone find or start a proper homeserver

@drewdevault I would like to find a good tui client for that, bonus point if it supports irc and slack as well

@drewdevault As I understand it, that was the plan - matrix.org was to be super popular only while they were still debugging the federating bits of the protocol and server software, and users should eventually spread more evenly across servers.

I'd prefer if they at least closed new user registrations on matrix.org, though.

Most people are brainwashed by FAANG into thinking that one platform equals one central server, so new users still gravitate towards matrix.org, sadly.

@drewdevault The major problem with shutting down matrix.org is the migration of users. Any matrix group can be on multiple redundant home servers. But AFAIK, user accounts are tied to a single home server. While you can start a new account from another home server, you'll lose permissions associated with old account - like admin privileges.

@drewdevault I think the matrix.org folks agree! It's costing them lot's of money. Just a tough migration to do anywhere near seemlessly for all the users they've ended up with.

@drewdevault maybe they should write a server that doesn’t suck using, say, Erlang, and switch to XML encoding
