✨Groups by Pixelfed

Imagine if you could bring Facebook Groups to the fediverse, using your Pixelfed account!

Pixelfed Groups will be a separate and optional package that admins can install if desired.

Groups will ship with:

- Private Groups
- Mobile App
- Web UI
- Client API
- Federation (w/ Lemmy + others)
- Extensive mod tools

But wait, there's more, we're standardizing our Groups implementation so other projects can take advantage of our App and Client API.

Shipping Soon!

@pixelfed I'm looking forward to trying this, as the Groups thing is the only real reason why I'm still on Facebook!

@pixelfed This is great!! This seems so different from Pixelfed though, that I wonder if it could be made into a standalone, differently-branded type of server? I’m curious about the Events feature as well! It could also be a good replacement for MeetUp with the combination of conversation space + series of events.

@pixelfed I've been waiting for something like this since years!!! Looking forward!!

@pixelfed the only reason I still have a farcebook account is because I have a business page that does quite well for us.

@pixelfed oh please get mastodon and others to implement this. Groups, Org Pages, etc would all be welcome so people know what they're looking at ^_^

Has there been any interest from the #Mastodon / #Mobilizon / #Bonfire teams on interoperability?

It seems that the value of #groups comes down to the network effect, so getting interoperability between the most group-focused #Fediverse apps is key.

Clearly Mobilizon / Bonfire are doing a lot of work here, while #Masto has a mass of users. It would also be interesting to see groups in some something like #Peertube, adding a differentiating factor to YouTube.
