If you want to check whether your server federates with Threads, you can use this tool (enter your server name in the part marked "filter by domain"):

➡️ fedipact.veganism.social

Here's a list of nice well-run servers which have blocked Threads:

@FediTips

Is there a way to block this from my account or a way to ask the server to do it?

Fedi.Garden 🌱

@HereToChewGum @FediTips

Block Threads you mean?

You can hide it from your account, but that will not hide your account from Threads.

A better option is to ask your server admin to block threads.net.

If you just want to hide it from your account, go to the profile of someone from threads.net, click ⋯ and then "block domain". But this will not really be a block as such if it's a user doing it.

@FediTips Would be great if the status field has an explanation.

Fedi.Tips

@juergen

Good point, have added some info on how to use it to the original post.

Geoff Berner

@FediTips sorry, I'm not very computer literate. Can you tell me if @zeroes is blocking threads? I'll have to leave if they aren't.

Fedi.Garden 🌱

@Geoffberner @FediTips @zeroes

It's okay, they are blocking it! 🥳

You can search for servers by entering their name in the search box in the top left. I've attached a screenshot as an example.

ShredderFeeder

@Geoffberner There is a search bar at the top, you can search for your instance.

Looks like you're good.

@FediTips Probably going to migrate. Not looking forward to it, but I prefer it to giving implied consent to federation with Threads

@FediTips
Thanks for the list. I'm glad my instance is not blocking it. I'm looking forward to it. I like interacting with a lot of people

ShredderFeeder

@Happygoatee @FediTips In the near future, instances that don't block it will, themselves, get blocked.

DELETED

@ShredderFeeder
The decision should be on the individual, not the instance.

ShredderFeeder

@Happygoatee It comes down to "my instance, my rules" The instance owner makes the rules.

DELETED

@ShredderFeeder. Valid. Thanks for the feedback.

Hey folks. This is a good reminder to read the rules and make sure they align with what you want from an instance. There are plenty of places to go!

@FediTips

If your account is on one of the federated servers and you don't want to move, is there a way for users to block an entire server instance, instead of user-by-user?

Fedi.Tips

@ralfmaximus

You can hide an entire instance by going to the profile page of someone on that instance, clicking ⋯ and then "Block domain". However, that won't really block the domain, it will still be able to see you.

Petra van Cronenburg

@ralfmaximus I found a blocklist for Meta/Threads to import myself and it seems to work (under Import, then choosed Blocklists). Unfortunately, I don't remember where I got it. Could have been @FediPact or on Github but I'm not sure. Unfortunately, these blocks are no "real" ones. Blocks by your instance are harder. @FediTips

fedipact.online

@NatureMC @ralfmaximus @FediTips you might be thinking of the second method listed here

the "blocking threads.net by uploading a 'domain blocking list'" bit

@nm The fedipact list incorrectly lists Social.coop as on the fedipact. Many of us support your efforts: loomio.com/d/AZcJK6y2/discussi

However, our co-op has officially agreed only to *limit* Threads: loomio.com/d/AZcJK6y2/discussi

So it would best to represent us as limiting, not as signatories.

Thanks for your efforts. Although I don't want to block myself, I think it is healthy to have fediverse spaces that do block, so I think your efforts are helpful for the ecosystem.

@FediTips The tool says my server is federated. I've noticed exactly zero threads toots so far, and thus zero that give me cause for concern.

Fedi.Tips

@TimWardCam

I think the causes for concern are things like this:

glaad.org/smsi/report-meta-fai

"...extreme anti-trans hate content remains widespread across Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. All of the posts below were reported by GLAAD via Meta’s standard reporting systems; Meta either replied that posts were not violative or simply did not take action on them."

They aren't moderating hate, and the usual response to that is to defederate. It's best to do this before hate spreads further.

@FediTips Sure - I've seen those concerns. What I haven't see is any toots from threads. If I do see anything like that then of course I'll take appropriate action.

ShredderFeeder

@FediTips I'm kinda dismayed at how many instances aren't blocking threads outright...

GhostOnTheHalfShell

@FediTips

Now here’s a question how do you make bare links like that?

GhostOnTheHalfShell

@FediTips

like these

➡️ fedipact.veganism.social

➡️ fedi.garden

➡️ fedi.tips/transferring-your-ma

never mind it’s just the side effect of multiple urls, but it’d be nice to be able to suppress link previews at times

Fedi.Tips

@GhostOnTheHalfShell

All you have to do is select the ➡️ emoji from your emoji picker, then type the link next to it. (You have to include https:// at the start to make the link clickable by the way.)

I add ➡️ just to make it easier to see where the important links are in a post. They don't serve any other function.

GhostOnTheHalfShell

@FediTips

yeh, I was hoping there was a way to nerf preview. In some posts it gets in the way

Delta Sierra

@FediTips glad to see my current server is blocking threads!

A bit disappointed to see many of the largest servers aren't blocking though.

Archie

@FediTips Interesting that the majority of the much heralded 14 million accounts aren't actually active!

DELETED

@FediTips

You can also block them for your own account, without having to switch servers. (note: I'm not sure if this is the same level as when an instance does it)

mastodon.social/@stupidjim/111

DB

@FediTips the fedipact list seems much easier to use now - previously I couldn't get a sort and didn't seem complete. Thank you for posting this information

Nick G

@FediTips

Are there any instance lists that include the maximum post character count for each instance. It was very important to me last time I migrated and I suspect it might be for a good many others.

The only reason I don't use mastodon.ie (which blocks threads) as main account is the standard 500 character limit. Pity. I do bung them a few Euro from time to time as c.im doesn't need donations.

Fedi.Tips

@ratcatcher

Not directly, as far as I know.

However, you could try to look for an instance that is on Glitch or Hometown, as they allow admins to easily adjust their limits. (Vanilla Mastodon doesn't.)

There are also non-Mastodon Fedi platforms to consider, which tends to have higher character limits too (or no limits at all in some cases).

Nick G

@FediTips

To clarify, I'm not currently looking for a new instance. But quite a few instances running Mastodon have manually reconfigured the maximum. This one, for example, is 5000.

Fedi.Tips

@ratcatcher

Oh yeah, it can be adjusted, it's just more difficult on vanilla Masto. In some cases it's impossible because the hosting service doesn't allow access to the individual files of the instance's software.

That's why Glitch etc tend to be better because they have the tools within the admin's GUI.

Daron Brewood 🇬🇧

@FediTips Come on @jon it might be a good ideas for you to block too…..

Michael Kohne

@FediTips Is there a straightforward way to determine what accounts that I follow wouldn't be accessible from a given server? I'd like to have an idea of what might go away before I start the transfer process.

Fedi.Tips

@mhkohne

The most reliable method would probably be to create an account on the new server and upload your follows before you do the actual transfer, and see how that affects your follow list.

Follows can always be uploaded through the import export process, it's at the start of the step by step guide.

(To transfer followers as well you need to do the full transfer, but follows (i.e accounts you follow) doesn't require this.)

Also, if worst happens, you can transfer back if you want.
