So... would the #DigitalMarketsAct basically make WhatsApp flip the XMPP federation switch back on..?

@Gargron I hope.
Depending on the final draft, it also could be that Whatsapp has to provide a API to send messages, which would undermine encryption or make it really hard to implement.

I hope they provide "real" federation.

@Gargron Or, in a better world, it would make WhatsApp users just migrate to XMPP.

@Gargron cue the inevitable "oh no it's going to put users in danger because who knows how encryption is implemented by some random third party server" bullshit takes.

I can already feel them, lurking in the distance. *sigh*

@Gargron I think FB chat, zoom and several google chat applications are also XMPP under the hood.

Sounds a little messy but also very cool.

@gargron AFAIK WhatsApp does not use standard XMPP or OMEMO so it will not work out of the box with open federation XMPP.

@Gargron Something like that :)

But it'll take time: first the DMA needs to be voted (2022), then enter into force (2023), then the Commission needs to designate the gatekeepers (2023), and then they have four years before the full #interoperability obligation incl group chats applies (2027).

Thank you big tech industry lobbying.
