Testing out this tiny little guy currently—RISC-V in a cute little cyberdeck package. What do you want to know about it? I'll work on a video soon! #riscv #cyberdeck #laptop (Disclosure: This laptop was provided for review by Sipeed)

@geerlingguy maybe test if supertuxkart or minetest are playable ? does the imagination graphic card support vulkan ? run vkmark ? can box86 be used ? does it have any gpio accessible ? is mainline linux supported ? how is the battery life like ? can it run without the battery ? is the screen bright enough for use outside ? is the npu usable ? @Infoseepage Sadly they also shrunk how usable the 'RedPoint' tracking rubber nubbin is. It's a pain to use :( @geerlingguy I've been thinking about getting something in this space again. Used to use Librettos and Win CE HPCs like the Jornada and Psion Netbook Pro. @geerlingguy I actually just spotted this thing. Obviously you gotta compile the Linux kernel on this. @ernie Heh, I did. And it is *slow* :D Some preliminary results: https://github.com/geerlingguy/sbc-reviews/issues/39 (86 minutes vs Pi 5 at 35). But not meant to be an Arm performance-killer, it *is* faster than the JH7110 in the VisionFive 2 and Mars V. @geerlingguy Have you toyed with #RiscV so far? I want to dip my toes in it, but given my limited amount of time, and the rumors I've heard that software support is only slowly getting there, I've decided to temporarily hold on and watch.
@aks Not bad; though the little nubbin "RedPoint" (not Trackpoint, ha!) is very stiff and not fun to use for more than a couple minutes :( @techbits I loved the little netbook I had in college. Very similar vibe, though the keyboard layout on this thing gets frustrating. @geerlingguy Netbooks were a love-hate thing. Very cool device, except in the literal sense where it tried to burn a hole in your jeans. Also not cool if you had to use it, for any actual productive purpose. 'gets frustrating' - keyboard looks a bit 'WPH' not 'WPM' @geerlingguy how long does the battery last? How much does it weight? What's the screen res? Looks cute :) @geerlingguy I mainly want to know who this is for. What kind of user would really benefit. Does it have much utility other than serving as an ssh client in emergencies while on the go? Or is it just a curiosity built for people who geek out over RISC-V? @ganonmaster RISC-V devs, mostly. Not worth it for almost anyone else at this stage (and price... starts almost $400!) @geerlingguy Have they used better screws than the ones that other review units have (too soft and extremely prone to stripping)? Also, does it automatically boot off of the NVMe drive, if installed? Would be love to see other compute modules come out for it in the future to support faster chips or even more efficient chips depending on use case. @geerlingguy does it work with 100% mainline Linux without special forks and patches for their hardware? |
@geerlingguy Obviously we need to know if it can run Doom or Crisis.
