Imma be honest with you chief regardless of the fact that I think mastodon.social *ought* to stay open for reasons I outlined on our official blog I am feeling psychologically overwhelmed by the influx of new people and worried if my architecture will be able to handle it... It's been put to the test by a fair number of overlapping user migrations recently...

We need to spread new people between all the different Mastodon servers but how? I don't even know how people are finding mastodon.social specifically, I sure as hell ain't promoting it anywhere, so there's no switch I can turn to make new people go to a different server.

@Gargron The problem is that despite decentralization being a strength, many people are wary about casting their lot in with one of the countless, smaller instances. Who runs that server? Do they respect our privacy? What if the server shuts down out of the blue before I have a chance to migrate my profile? Lots of questions in the back of peoples' minds lead them to seek out instances they think are "official" and will be around a while, like the one operated by the founder of Mastodon.

@Gargron Everything has to grow. Its all about growing up. You can save some resources by deleting all inactive accounts/ bot accounts.

@Gargron the reason people are potentially here vs another instances is the culture and moderation perspective is something they can relate to.

Perhaps one of the methods for finding new instances would be to randomly assign amongst a pool of similar philosophies at signup?

Or to scale up the mastodon.social team itself to maintain the culture, and add easier fundraising methods?

@Gargron well, if you are the creator of this, you are going to fall behind, because the president of the bolivarian republic of venezuela is putting this website as an alternative to switch from twitter to this guy MASTODON ... fast work because we are more than 33 million of Venezuelans

@Gargron estaría genial que tuviera la opción de traducción de toots

@Gargron ok.... Could you please send me the link to the page you are referring to?I'll use it to tell the people to get there instead of going to the social page.By the way, Where are you located at? USA? Twitter it's been censoring and closing accounts and that's why so many people is coming here.. it's disappointing what you are saying given that I understood it well...

Hi @Gargron, thabks you for your support and your hard work maintaning mastodon.social. Is it a way to help to translate joinmastodon to spanish or other languages?

charlag

@Gargron how about the message in signup area to consider other servers?Jeez even WoW has different servers and people figure it out

@Gargron mastodon[dot]social is the top hit when searching Mastodon on DuckDuckGo. I'm sure that isn't helping. I'm pretty sure that's how I joined a year or two ago.

🪦

@Gargron This is an old issue. I agree with you completely that people should go to joinmastodon.org, but I also think that mastodon.social should close it's registrations permanently and that you should open a new flagship server (e.g. second.mastodon.social, first.mastodon.social can redirect to the current mastodon.social). It's just an idea, but IMO the best one.

@Gargron honestly, I migrated away from a small and not very maintanined server recently and picked mastodon.social because I figured it would be up-to-date.

The process is fairly painless I guess (aside from people having to re-follow you on the new account) so if needed I'll migrate again.

It would be nice to be able to import the posts dump to restore the history on another server, tough.
