Mozilla and Automattic really duking it out for who can lose decades of community goodwill the fastest

@Daojoan Mozilla will probably get the gong. The race to the bottom is really heating up - no doubt due to friction.

@990000 @Daojoan Mozilla lost my goodwill years ago, and I was never overly fond of Automaticc. What's the current issue with the both of them, anyway? Maybe I'll loathe Mozilla even more.

@tkinias @990000 @Daojoan
Firefox is getting a 'shopping' sidebar and ads built-in.

@FritzAdalis

God damn it.

I use #Firefox specifically to avoid advertising, because advertising is a #malware vector. Now I find out it's going to have that malware built in.

Now what do I use? There aren't too many competent browsers with an official #Debian package, and even fewer that are capable of robustly blocking ads.

@argv_minus_one @FritzAdalis @990000 @tkinias idk much about browser architecture, but brave browser works well for me. Seems to be decent at blocking ads.

@DoctorBrodsky

Brave is tied up with cryptocurrency. I trust them even less than I trust Mozilla's advertising partners.

@990000 @Daojoan oh man, whatโ€™d they do? Is this a jetpack / AI scraping thing? I gotta yank jetpack from my self-hosted WP blog.
Also - hey 990000, itโ€™s tooManyOscilloscopes from IG - good to find ya here!

@forty2 @Daojoan
right on! It looks like
Mozilla: layoffs and AI?

@Daojoan People don't have a lot of alternatives with Mozilla. Wordpress however has a thriving sleight of alternative options ๐Ÿค”

@sass @Daojoan

Any recommendations for alternatives to WP that can be self hosted and as easy to install? I am frustrated with the path Automattic/Matt has choen to take.

@MichaelBishop @sass Donโ€™t make yourself more problems than necessary. As long as you self-host, you will be fine with WP. Before you switch to another blog, let the situation develop further.

just_one_bear

@frumble @MichaelBishop @sass Indeed! From my understanding, WP (the code) is separate from WP (the hosting company owned by Automattic) and is thus Still OK. I use neither but the details are bubbling up about it so it seems fine to be making no sudden moves.

Fazal Majid

@just_one_bear @frumble @MichaelBishop @sass nope, if you have the Jetpack plugin installed (e.g. for Akismet comment spam protection, your content is still uploaded to Automattic and sold to AI companies, according to Derek Powazek.

Some of this may be misunderstandings due to Automattic being tight-lipped, but the Intelligence Community has an adage that you gauge an adversaryโ€™s capabilities, not their intentions, and Wordpress must now be classified as adversarial or untrusted software.

Iโ€™m happy I switched to Hugo 6 years ago.

Ericka Simone

@Daojoan seems like most tech management right now.

SpaceLifeForm

@Daojoan

No contest. Mozilla Firefox does not support Jetpack by default. You have to install a plugin.

But, when a Wordpress site installs Jetpack, then you had no choice.

Client Server distinction.

@Daojoan

VMware is a late entry, but making up ground fast.

John Timaeus

@womble

Back in the 3.5 to 5.0 era, I'd say yeah, at least some. When the senior engineers would reach out directly over a minor community comment.

gullevek โ˜ข๏ธ

@Daojoan @jwz Sad that there is no browser left to use. Really sucks. More than the wordpress shit

bedast :diabetes:

@Daojoan What have they done now? They kinda have a history of violating user trust, but their users donโ€™t seem to actually care.

Keith

@Daojoan yeah, not a lot of good options in the browser space currently. Iโ€™m giving Floorp a spin, and so far it seems pretty good. floorp.app/

DNP :donor:

@keydelk @Daojoan Me too, I've been using Floorp for a month and so far it's been great.

mirabilos

@Daojoan Mozilla, goodwill? That ship sailed years and years ago. By now itโ€™s only the remnants of inertia.

Fingel

@Daojoan People love to dunk on Mozilla but too often it's a coping mechanism for them to feel better about continuing to use Chrome. Firefox is fine, even if Mozilla isn't the org we want it to be.

Wade McGillis

@Fingel i'll dunk on mozilla all i want. firefox is my daily driver browser on my phone and computer. i don't even have chrome on my computer.

Ryan Lounsbury

@Daojoan Seemingly the term of this Decade is Corey Doctorow's 'Enshitiffcation'. Whether it be tried and true companies like Microsoft taking it's sterling brand Windows and plunging it into the depths of shit by loading it up with ads and selling Start menu slots to the highest bidder. Or, Mozilla/Automattic the do-gooders of the modern web being altruistic at every turn.

Until the reality of having to make a buck to keep the lights on is an actual thing.

Oggie

@Daojoan Is this in reaction to their ongoing quest to will LLMs into something useful? I ask because it feels like, contextually, there is something else awful that just happened that I have somehow missed.

David

@Daojoan Time for someone to fork Firefox and get rid of the shopping bar and adds.

LA Legault

@Daojoan @aral what does that mean for ๐Ÿ”ฅ Firefox?
