When we haul the anchor up using a cockpit winch ⛵ ⚓

an image showing how to pull up an anchor without a windlass, by hooking a chain hook onto the chain, attaching a hauling line to that, passing it through a block, and leading a line to a cockpit winch.

@rek ha when I started sailing I had no idea how you were supposed to pull up the anchor. No windlass on the boat so I just sat down and pulled hard. I only have 30ft of chain so maybe it's easier. The last few feet can be tough.

I guess most people probably have a windlass :)

@mrj we pull it up by hand most times, but the cockpit winch method is good when anchoring in deeper waters, or to deal with the last few feet, as you mentioned. Sometimes its damn hard to break an anchor out of thick mud/clay (sometimes its piled up on the fluke and adds a ton of weight).
We have 100 ft of chain, and the anchor is 33 lbs.

@rek It's a work out! I once had to reposition 3 times in one day and I was legit unsure if I was going to get the anchor up on that last one...

Thanks for the diagram! I didn't even think of needing a stopper 😅

@mrj Might not be worthwhile for 30 ft of chain, but it does permit me to catch my breath between rounds of pulling :).... and its pretty useful when hauling with a cockpit winch (although you could just use two chain hooks instead).
