Say what you will about generative AI, it's certainly crammed all of my timelines with creepy fake-looking images that my friends keep posting as "Amazing!!" -- even friends who are art aficionados and I thought would know better. It's having a strange effect on me, which is a growing distaste and distrust of images themselves, as if the whole visible universe is being covered with some kind of slime.

@stevesilberman I and a lot of my friends work in data science and funnily enough that means hardly any generated images :)

@stevesilberman I haven't had that level of exposure yet, but I totally get what you mean - I can almost physically anticipate the slime-ness. Wonder where that will end up ...

@stevesilberman
exactly what they say is the point of disinformation, innit. They love the plagiarism machine because it is wearing them out having to come up with their own insipid lies all the time.

@stevesilberman I like it when the goal is to see just how creepy you can get the robot to be, but I don’t like when they’re passed off as actual human-created art (or used to replace human generated art)

@stevesilberman Regrettable, but I agree. It's made me extremely distrustful.

@stevesilberman My hope with all this slime is that people will start taking "don't trust anything you read on social media" seriously again.

still can't work out who i am

@JustinH @stevesilberman and where do people get their trusted info from, as this stuff is not constrained to the socials is it?

@peterainbow @stevesilberman The same as they always (should) have, from sources they trust. Not publications that accept anonymous submissions.

still can't work out who i am

@JustinH @stevesilberman see recent articles about how wiki and trade and science publishers are getting flooded with LLM generated submissions

@stevesilberman

Distaste and distrust of images is the point behind generative AI, that's what makes it worth all those billions invested.

@stevesilberman as an artist, these AI "artworks" everywhere are making me unmotivated to share and even make art sometimes. It's like a bad virus. Not only do they steal our work to "train" these AI, but it's flooding everything with trash and it's so overwhelming in a bad way.

@stevesilberman
With the story about an AI-generated image winning top prize at an art fair, this kind of punctuated the point that no image is to be "trusted." Back when photography took over the image business, modernism did a thing; I'm guessing something similar now, as AI overtakes photography?

@stevesilberman I've seen some really good looking AI stuff. And I've seen some horrendous shit.

But what bothers me most is that the horrendous shit is being used to promote scams (see: Willy Wonka Experience) and the best looking stuff is still kind of generic.
