Shopping for computer hardware gives me anxiety and headache lately.

I can understand CPUs being expensive, I get it.

But motherboards... They cost king's ransom for useless bells and whistles like RGB backlight (who the fuck ever needs this) and crappy WiFi and fancy black PCB. I hate that.

Can't I just fucking buy an "ugly green" MoBo that has the actually relevant stuff? You know, the expansion slots to connect disks and devices to. The stuff people actually buy a motherboard for.

@BigFoxBoss No timestamp.

And, for the record, I go no issue with POST code indicators, they are at least useful when something goes wrong. All the other stuff though...

@drq
yes, the point is "Other stuff" and marketing BS on most motherboards these days :megarofl:

The entire video is on point, no pun (in relation to my previous post) intended

If I may, to rant about hardware too...
The ONLY mobo that fit most of my criteria was the flagship (no midrange mobo has enough friggin SATA ports on it which is ridiculous, requiring separate purchases of extension boards that would take space or just not fit thanks to C H O N K GPUs), and even THEN it's the shitty AS(S)US brand, and my specific specimen intermittently glitches upon shutting down and refusing to start and appartently that is a common issue in this board and it's "dark" edgy counterpart.

Says a lot about quality too.

Also, back on topic of RGB backlight...

PC modding used to be ART. It's because there was some EFFORT and PASSION to adding RGB backlights and novelty displays and crazy details to your machine.

And now it's just poor taste.

Reminds me...
I remember the days when watercooling with "green alien goo" was the shit back in the day :megarofl:
Also, the "antec dragon" and similar ones being used for modding a lot

@drq *and* you can't get those 7-segment debug readouts anymore!

@drq > The stuff people actually buy a motherboard for.

I suspect that most of their customers don't need that. I worked in computer parts shops. 99% of sales are basic configurations - one/two banks of RAM, one drive, one/none of GPU. Even "gaming" setups.

At some point I noticed most motherboards getting more and more basic as well. Want to sell a little extra? Sure, let's put in some lights and twinkles because this is what people will see at the time of purchase and maybe during operation. Extra storage slots? 99% of people won't think of them as an advantage during purchase and maybe 10% will regret it couple of years later.

So I get why this is happening. We are just in minority and niche products are always shamelessly expensive.

@drq
You know, the word RGB in the name increases the cost of anything PC-Related by 10%
So does the word "Gaming"
But when there's both, the cost is from 50% to 120% bigger.

5.5 years ago I've bought ASUS PRIME X370-A — it wasn't very expensive and had relative big number of slots/ports
