I've been laid off at the @TexasObserver today. The publication no longer has a digital editor or social media manager (I was both), and has also fired its editor-in-chief and laid off another member of the editor team. We're not hiring right now but let's be in touch about some possible freelance. @kitoconnell @TexasObserver oh no- I’ve been using FlexJobs and there are a lot of great jobs on there if you haven’t heard of it. Apparently we are all supposed to be using JobScan to fight AI scanners as well and I just started doing that too @kitoconnell @TexasObserver Having grown up in Texas and been there most of my adult life, that sucks. I hope you find something soon. Gayle Reaves and Gabriel Arana, the two other team members let go from @TexasObserver are also excellent journos who deserve your support. Thanks everyone who is boosting this thread and just sending in your well wishes. I'm heartbroken but I'll make it. I have moved my 'work' account off of the @TexasObserver server to @oconnell. My followers should be moved over automatically. I'm continuing this account as my personal account and will continue to ramble about lefty politics, video games, enby life and general shitposting here.  I'm extremely proud of the work I did @TexasObserver, including running the social media campaign which helped save the publication, expanding onto Mastodon where we received 10,000s of followers, along with several other new social networks, all while writing stories that got award nominations. I helped bring our traffic out of a death spiral too. Sorry to hear about your job. I liked the quality of articles in the Observer. It's a shame this publication has financial challenges. Their loss as well as yours.  @kitoconnell @TexasObserver @jargoggles @TexasObserver yes one that I ran on Mastodon. I was also responsible for launching Texasobserver.social at all, without which the campaign would not have been nearly as successful. We did get many donations from #birdsite but Masto was key to saving the publication. I also successfully expanded TXO onto several other new social networks and brought our traffic out of a tail spin.     |
