 @RickiTarr If anything Star Trek is proof that even if we manage to solve all of the great problems of our era, people will just learn to tolerate new ridiculously harmful conditions, like exploding control panels, and video game characters regularly coming to life and trying to kill people in the real world.  @theropologist fascinating effect that the worse it gets, the less you can imagine anything better.   Once I gave up hope for a better society I could feel slightly less shitty about the world, so there's that.   @theropologist Yes.. It kinda just feels like a cop-out answer in response to younger generations who have been struggling at life and have been learning that this kind of struggle doesn't have to be this way. :neofox_sad: @Schouten_B Yeah it's called shifting baselines. It's why there aren't plenty more fish in the sea. We accept the world we are given as normal and don't realize what we've lost because we've never directly experienced it.  That would be the extreme version of Nos mean y nos dicen que está lloviendo, right? @theropologist Progressives account for a fraction of 1% of the voters. Everyone else is some flavor of conservative.  rowr I have a particular snit along those lines because the right’s super power is expropriation of anything beneficial for their own tyrannical purposes. They manage to freeze society as a whole around delusion. |
