so. linkedin & AI resumer reader story.

i have had one single "manager" job in my entire career. was sr director of a tools group. lasted 6 months. entire career, IC/SME. no other management titles other than the one.

got a cold call email from a firm developing AI based resume reading software company. "based on your resume, our software says you'd be a perfect candidate for VP of Eng".

i declined. i did also decide not to tell them just how bad their software must be, based on that "hit". that was in the last 2 years. i doubt it's improved noticeably.

@paul_ipv6 @inthehands @ajsadauskas I made up a company and said I was a manager of it on LinkedIn and actually got job offers. Faking it til you make it really works with these fools.

all the various research on poisoning LLMs should let us create some really "useful" companies, skills, etc. :)

@sidereal @paul_ipv6 @inthehands @ajsadauskas I started a real company and mention it on LinkedIn and I get a lot of spammed job offers and services pitches and stuff that *clearly* have not spent 15 seconds looking what this company does. (We’re an escape room. We clearly do not need, for instance, outsourced remote QA services, or a senior engineering manager, or etc)

there's definitely some crap "automation". try posting a job offer that has the word "engineer" anywhere in it and you'll be inundated with recent EE grads from india and no experience with anything you're doing.

it's the same quality of "AI" that winds up with netflix recommending "taken" after you've watched "love actually" because they both have liam neeson in them.

really? can't spend 30 seconds doing something better?

@paul_ipv6 @aubilenon @sidereal @ajsadauskas My life got a •lot• better when I changed my job title on LinkedIn from something software engineer-y to “Ne’er-do-well Bohemian”

i did have one consulting gig as "professional bad influence". may be time to update my linkedin profile. ;)

@sidereal @paul_ipv6 @inthehands @ajsadauskas maybe this is a good use case for an LLM; have it write back to them and waste their time (to change the economics of this spammy approach) without wasting my own time.
