Just a reminder, please do add alt text descriptions to your images, videos and audio clips. It will make them accessible to people with visual or hearing impairment. You'll also get a lot more boosts if you add descriptions, because a lot of people only share posts that have descriptions. If you forget, don't worry, you can edit your post afterwards to add it ๐ It can take a while to get into the habit, so there's a bot to help you remember at @PleaseCaption

Health Is Wealth
@feditips @PleaseCaption Hi, I've just posted from my Linux machine using the Whalebird app. It doesn't appear to have an ALT description feature for some reason. I'm looking around for it but there is nothing obvious I can see. In the meantime I have edited the post using the Tusky app to add the description on my android phone :) I might have to find a Whalebird alternative if I can't find the feature... It must be 'somewhere'! I'll keep looking.

@feditips Is there a way to locate an individual post that doesnโt have it. There is one post I forgot to add it to ages ago and I did before they changed it so you can edit an image to add it afterwards. Iโd love to go back and make it so that 100% of my image posts have a description. I suspect the answer will be no, but you donโt know if you donโt ask.

It also greatly helps with using translators for the posts. OCR is hit or miss at best made much worse went trying to do a machine translation on top. Not everyone is fluent in English and there are a lot of amazing post in languages outside of English (or insert any language or languages you're proficient in).

If you're tired of doomscrolling, try #BloomScrolling instead. You'll see lovely pictures of flowers ๐ป

@feditips Thanks! I was actually just wondering about this not so long ago.
SentientTP
@feditips I'd actually prefer not to see detached replies in the middle of my feed. I either ignore them, or I have to trace to the original post for context.
Fedi.Tips ๐
If you're changing servers and transferring followers over to your new account, it can take a while for all of them to migrate over, possibly many days. It may be that a follower's server hasn't handled the transfer request yet, but is working through a queue. You'll know this happened if you get a load of followers from the same server all transferred at once. (Note that some followers may never transfer if their server is broken, or if your new server blocks their server, or vice versa.)
Fedi.Tips ๐
You can make posts appear on your Mastodon account at specific times using the post scheduling feature. Scheduling isn't in the official apps or web interface, but it is available through third party apps such as Tusky and Fedilab, and through third party websites like https://plan.fedilab.app and https://buffer.com/mastodon The feature is built into Mastodon, but for some unknown reason there's no official interface for it yet. That's why it is only available through third parties.
Fedi.Tips ๐
Do you prefer typing emoji instead of stopping to choose them from a picker? You can do this when writing a post on Mastodon's web interface by typing a : (colon) and then a keyword without a space. This will automatically bring up emoji with that keyword in their description. For example if you type :sun it will show you emoji with the keyword "sun". (Note that if there are many matches for a keyword, you may need to go to the picker to see them all.)
A sonic screwdriver
@feditips The only thing I have not tried are groups. How do groups work exactly? How do you find one and join? Just because, I have not seen them as an obvious feature, but people talk about them and now I have to ask you I just can't resist. ๐๐ Thank you.

@feditips @spacedragon I just discovered how to follow groups a couple days ago. Really enjoying the ones I have joined so far.

@feditips Literally a few minutes ago I was doing it manually but now I learned about StreetPass which is incredible. Thank you for the tip!

Pixelfed is a photo sharing network on the Fediverse, intended as an alternative to Instagram. You can follow Pixelfed accounts from Mastodon and vice versa. There's more info about it at: โก๏ธ https://pixelfed.org There are servers you can sign up on at: โก๏ธ https://pixelfed.org/servers ...and apps you can use at: โก๏ธ https://pixelfed.org/mobile-apps To see the latest news about Pixelfed, follow its official account at: โก๏ธ @pixelfed

@feditips @Feditext @ricardoharvin This is great news! I use Metatext to post almost exclusively since a lot of my images have text (LP covers, screenshots, etc) and itโs the only app Iโve found with OCR built in and I like to be kind to our sight-challenged friends!
Feditext
@feditips@mstdn.social thank you for the shout out! we're excited to keep the Metatext project going forward.

Who gets the "Report" *Their* server Admin? I've had one that I wanted to "report"
๐Maximum Derek๐
@feditips Are their resources to help admins keep up with rogue or otherwise problematic instances? Like is there a group that announces or maintains a list of problematic servers admins might want to block or defederate with?
Kris Samsel
@feditips @peertube @theatticdwellers Fediverse should have an app for Wi-Fi televisions. Iโd watch. Donโt watch videos on my phone. Battery issues. โฎ๏ธ

If you want to find your Twitter friends on Mastodon and the Fediverse, there's a tool that can help you do that: โก๏ธ https://fedifinder.glitch.me FediFinder was created by @luca (If you're wondering why it asks for authorisation, it's explained at https://social.luca.run/@luca/110768875074355454)

The Fediverse has its own Twitch-style livestreaming platform called OwnCast: โก๏ธ @owncast You can find out more from its official website at https://owncast.online Because it's part of the Fediverse, you can follow OwnCast accounts from Mastodon etc, and when they go live you will see a post in your timeline to let you know. For example, the RetroStrangeTV livestream can be viewed at: โก๏ธ https://live.retrostrange.com ...and it can be followed at: โก๏ธ @rstv

@feditips @owncast Multi-streaming is a feature supported by both Picarto and Twitch, and it's something I would love to be able to do together with friends, each of us streaming our own thing and we can vibe together a la parallel play.
Isla :verifiedpikachu:
@feditips Can you make (or link) a guide to the differences between OwnCast and PeerTubeโs Live feature?
Fedi.Tips ๐
Looks like the Mastodon developers have set up an official account for highlighting smaller servers that have committed to the covenant: โก๏ธ @ServerHighlights Followers of @FediGarden may find this concept familiar ๐ Anyway, jokes aside this is great to see from Mastodon's developers. Anything which promotes a more diverse range of servers is a good thing! ๐
Mike Harvey
@feditips @ServerHighlights @FediGarden Presumably, purely Mastodon servers though, rather than the rest of the #fediverse ?

Fedi.Tips ๐
One of the most under-used features of Mastodon is audio. You can attach audio files to your posts, they can be in MP3, OGG, WAV, FLAC, AAC, M4A or 3GP formats. They can be any length, as long as the file size is under 40 megabytes (some servers may have even higher limits). I've attached an example audio file to this post, you should be able to play it on most interfaces and apps. (Music is "Modern Technology" by Mokka Music, used under Creative Commons Attribution licence)

@feditips @FediFollows Its annoying but for so many women, its the only source of income. Men hold over 90% of all wealth and Boomers hold 80% of all weath. And the wealth transfer of 200 million americans to the top 20% of the wealthiest in american has caused mass insecurity. So I'm torn on who to support.
PeerTube content still has a long way to go, and YouTube's network effect is unhealthily strong, but as YouTube keeps tightening its grip there are ever-increasing numbers of publishers and viewers looking for alternatives.
If you're a viewer, you can follow, watch and interact with PeerTube accounts entirely from within Mastodon etc. You don't need to be on PeerTube yourself, your Mastodon etc account is enough.
I'll post tomorrow about options for publishing videos on PeerTube.
@feditips
Does Peertube have an app for my smart TV?
