As a queer person I relate to how racial and ethnic identity should also be a complex spectrum treated with respect and even wonder (first Black woman and first Indian-American at once!!), but white conservatives hate that more than anything as they try to binary-fy us all.

Backing into that space would have the effect of being in different rows of seating. Going forward into the gap would be better for talking to someone on the bench but then the bars are just awkward and useless. Which is true in any case.

No way this was ever designed with wheelchairs in mind.

You may have to add that the bench are like two chairs 1m/3ft apart, but linked by a back with a handicapped logo.
