Like thorns, the spikes may protect their nests from predators.

@laminda sitting here with insomnia stifling involuntary laughter to avoid waking the whole damn house. Makes me wish the kids were little again so some PTA would ask me to send in snacks so I could do this in response...but, I'll settle for making these out of the blue one day for some potluck or family get together when it is least expected and least appropriate
