Watt-Wise Game Jam

"Build delightful games that use as little energy per second as possible in order to make games and computing more sustainable, and to discover new directions for software aesthetics. [...] We are developing both hardware and software estimation techniques for measuring energy consumption. Participants can use our open source power estimation tooling while developing their games to optimize for using less power. "

@320x200 Chris released a bunch of tools to inspect power usage of applications: github.com/wattwisegames/watt-

I haven't tried it yet, but I wonder how it compares to the number I get from the inverter display.

Hey we're a small group who put together a FREE programme of presentations around low-tech, permacomputing, collective tech practices, extraction, and ewaste.

Saturday 2 December, Amsterdam

Come and join us, listen to talks, ask questions, hang around and plot together about pmc and related practices.

FOMO alert: nope it's not streamed and probably won't be recorded, *but* surely you know a lot of cool people around you doing connected things, :unwanted_thinking: what about you try to organise something local as well? See permacomputing.net/getting_sta

Practising Permacomputing: Call for workshop participants

"This autumn is dedicated to Practising Permacomputing; a concept and a nascent community of practice-oriented around issues of resilience and regenerativity in computer and network technology derived, among others, from permaculture principles. As part of this community, space is offered to makers and thinkers in digital culture (and other connected areas) to put the fundamentals and applications of #permacomputing into practice through a series of workshops, a meetup, and a concluding day of public presentations with guests. Join us to explore permacomputing futures!"

Permacomputing Aesthetics: Potential and Limits of Constraints in Computational Art, Design and Culture

This coming wednesday 14 June, @praxeology @sandu @viznut and myself will give a quick overview of a paper about #permacomputing at the Ninth Computing within Limits 2023 workshop.

Paper can be found there: limits.pubpub.org/pub/6loh1eqi and the whole collection of LIMITS 23 papers is avail there limits.pubpub.org/ninth-comput

Our paper is a personal take on the potential and... limits of the current permacomputing practices in the context/constraints of #art #design and #culture production.

I will attend the workshop at the Amsterdam LIMITS hub hosted by @dosch

doc.pondr.nl/s/wt7vmXF0v#

Big thanks to our reviewers Eli Blevis, Birgit Penzenstadler, and Robert Soden for their helpful feedback. We also thank
the different groups and people currently gravitating around the term permacomputing for contributing to a growing number of rich discussions and debates. We are particularly grateful for the suggestions from @Greta @michal and @neauoire as
well as to @creativecoding for providing us with a platform to share an early reflection on permacomputing aesthetics. Finally, we would especially like to thank @loriemerson and @l03s for their substantial and stimulating comments! <3

Why is Palantir sponsoring the Dimensions art exhibition in Leipzig?

"Palantir is a US-based data analytics company whose business model seems to be the pushing and exceeding of any ethical and legal boundaries that stand in the way of a fully “transparent humanity”. Some questions come to mind. What was the reasoning behind Palantir’s decision to sponsor the Dimensions exhibition in Leipzig? What exactly were the role of art impresario Walter Smerling and the association Foundation for Art and Culture e.V. (Bonn) which he heads, after his efforts were stifled in Berlin? What role do art, curators and artists play in such an exhibition?"

This past weekend we held the first #permacomputing edit-a-thon. For two days a we've been going through all the stuff already added to permacomputing.net and discussed extensively the next steps to develop further this nascent concept and community of practice. We now have a few pads packed with stuff that we need to process and add back to the wiki, including a much better editing/copywriting guideline, plan for a better introductory text, as well as a beginning of an action plan for the group to work further together and organize a few more things in the coming months.

It's pretty cool :)

Thanks to Varia for hosting us, and of course thanks to all the participants: @cmos4040, Gizem, Katía, Lukas, @michal, Ola, @pixouls, @praxeology, @sandu, Sujata, and @viznut

We're happy to announce that we just started to work on three new interdependent online resources: the Damaged Earth Catalog, the Permacomputing wiki, and the permacomputing workshop series!

///

Damaged Earth Catalog

A growing online catalog of the different terms in circulation, used by communities of practice, in relation to computing and network infrastructure informed by ecological ethics, degrowth, resilience, repair, and minimalism. Currently developed by @l03s as part of her PhD research.

Permacomputing wiki

A new wiki about permacomputing that aims to expose its principles, present and discuss the concepts and jargon required to engage with permacomputing, and maintain a repository of related projects. Currently facilitated by @viznut and @320x200 open for contributors!

permacomputing.net

///

Permacomputing in the Arts

A workshop series that will be developed throughout end-2022 and 2023 as an onboarding course for permacomputing practices in art an design. The workshops will be made available as an Open Educational Resource. Developed by @320x200 as part of a postdoc research on the topic.

The Real Novelty of the ARPANET

"Physical distance was conquered well before the ARPANET by the telegraph. The kind of distance conquered by the ARPANET was instead the logical distance between the operating systems, character codes, programming languages, and organizational policies employed at each host site. Implementing the first packet-switched network was of course a major feat of engineering that should also be mentioned, but the problem of agreeing on standards to connect computers that had never been designed to play nice with each other was the harder of the two big problems involved in building the ARPANET—and its solution was the most miraculous part of the ARPANET story."
