Red Planet was released 24 years ago today.

"Astronauts, and their robotic dog AMEE, search for solutions to save a dying Earth by searching on Mars, only to have the mission go terribly awry."

Solo (2018): Corellia shipyard, art by Vincent Jenkins

It doesn't take much to create an impression. <3
Liam Ui Bhriain

@TheSpaceshipper You know, Corellia somehow looked like I imagined it from playing Rouge Squadron on the N64.

Alexander Dyas

@TheSpaceshipper At first glance this looked like War of the Worlds artwork.

Whether Concord (game, 2024) is back or not (the shooter was taken offline on September 6, but a large number of updates have been applied to the game on Steam over the past two weeks), its conceptual work is simply sublime.

@TheSpaceshipper This looks a bit like Simon Stalenhag's (apols, about lack diacritic marks) work, the beatup 70s retro-future aesthetic always does it for me.

Lazarou Monkey Terror ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒˆ

@TheSpaceshipper the art and design for this movie was way better than the movie deserved.
I remember doing a school project on futuristic cities and used a book of artwork from this movie as a resource.

Today is also the 26th anniversary of Deep Impact. Sure, it lost the box office battle against Armageddon that year, but I have a soft spot for this film.

@TheSpaceshipper perhaps controversial: it's my favourite out of the two!

slubman

@TheSpaceshipper I have a soft spot for the two of them. Deep impact being the more grounded movie, Armageddon just for the sheer action and comedy.

Neil Blevins

@TheSpaceshipper I liked it a lot better than armageddon, I always tear up at the scene on the beach towards the end

Verain

@TheSpaceshipper While he's working more realistic than Discworld, it still has the same style. Like the colours, the way people are posed. Nice to see some of his other stuff.

James Swallow

@TheSpaceshipper I saw one of the huge original marquee banners of this art just last week, at the Novium Museum in Chichester UK, part of their "May The Toys Be With You" exhibition: thenovium.org.uk/article/37954

@TheSpaceshipper #Alt4You #AltText H. R. Giger is lowered to the ground (sitting, not laying down) on the movie set with Alien's Pilot and pilot seat in the background, apparently being painted.

@TheSpaceshipper
If anyone is interested, the documentary "Jodorowsky's Dune" has a great intro into how Giger got into movies.

RIP Leiji Matsumoto, talented manga artist, amazing storyteller, director of the anime Space Battleship Yamato (1974), production supervisor of Daft Punk's Interstella 5555 (2003), and creator Space Pirate Captain Harlock (1977) and Galaxy Express 999 (1977).

He was 85.

Hello UK,
I just learned that Planetes (the 2003/2004 anime adaptation of the manga by Sunrise) is available on ITVX. I'm a little jealous.

Thank you CJ!
