Like a lot of people I'm really concerned about what the incoming regime is going to do, so here's one small way I'm trying to help: jacobian.org/2024/nov/11/digit

We're starting regular DSF Office Hours! Anyone’s welcome if you want to work on DSF things with others. I'll try to be there every week, and other board members will likely attend too.

If you're thinking about running for the DSF Board — this would be a great time to come and ask questions / get help with your nomination!

It'll be each Wednesday at 6PM UTC — about 4 hours from now. Short notice I know, but mark it down for next week.

DM/email me (or other board members) for joining info!

A couple weeks ago I gave a talk at @djangocon about the finances of the Django Software Foundation. I wanted to give folks a high-level understanding of our current financial situation, and then imagine a world where we had a substantially-larger budget.

Here's a written version of this talk, with annotated slides, and expanded notes:

@jacob This is really interesting. Do you know the name of the plot for the budget visualization? I'd like to make a similar one; doesn't look hard to draw but maybe there are tools?

@jacob This is a great (and aesthetically pleasing!) walk through of the practicalities of OSS fundraising! Wow!

2000s: "extend Python with C"
2010s: "extend Python with Python"
2020s: "extend Python with Rust"

I have many conflicting feelings about this progression…

@jacob in the last few months use uv is addressed more things that people realize. pip, pipx, github actions, and now a docker image.

🤔 I wonder when they have their own python fork.

@jacob too relatable, we have people mad at us for selling shirts

“We believe that open source should be sustainable"

"open source maintainers should get paid!”

Are two seperate beliefs. It's possible to talk about options to make FOSS and FLOSS sustainable that don't require the use of money / power coupons at all or as much or with such centrality. Or so I hope and choose to believe and imagine.
