Last month was the warmest May on record for the average sea surface temperature globally...

No surprises as usual - the last 6 months...

@ZLabe it was an insanely warm winter here in Minnesota... Shocking to see it was similar all over the northern hemisphere

With global sea ice currently at *record low* levels, both poles (#Arctic and #Antarctic) are more than two standard deviations below average (1981-2010)...

Top 5 warmest October global temperatures since at least 1891 - Japan Meteorological Agency (ds.data.jma.go.jp/tcc/tcc/prod). Small differences in ranking are normal between data sets.

We somehow made it to Friday! Yay! Here's your end of the week sea ice update:

#Arctic sea ice extent is currently the 9th lowest on record (JAXA data).

• about 180,000 km² above the 2010s mean
• about 530,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 1,160,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 1,480,000 km² below the 1980s mean

#Halloween (and October) is definitely my favorite time of year. When I am not making climate graphs, I am usually watching scary movies... So, despite it being a week late, I feel the need to also share my spooky graph with #Mastodon... 🎃

@ZLabe Like the plot, however a Fedi tip: posts about potentially distressing topics like climate change work better with a content warning. See fedi.tips/staying-safe-on-mast for a longer discussion.

Happy tooting 💚
