One thing that #Piketty pointed out in Capital and Ideology that seems obvious in retrospect but that I'd never considered is just how much wealth there is that our civilization has accumulated, but that shows up on nobody's balance sheet.

How much would a copy of today's Wikipedia have been "worth" 2000 years ago? Or even 200 years ago? How much are Maxwell's equations worth? Or germ theory? Or quantum mechanics? Or understanding evolution? Or the fast Fourier transform? ๐Ÿงต 1/n

How much is it worth to be able to read Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Mayan stelae, and the cuneiform tablets of Ashurbanipal's library?

If Disney had held the copyright to the complete works of Rumi and Shakespeare for the last 800 or 500 years respectively, how much would they have raked in? ๐Ÿงต 2/n

@ZaneSelvans My what a nice thread, a feast for Wikipedia-searching!

@ZaneSelvans Someone once put this the other way around and said that by being free and not having ads, Wikipedia destroys a billion dollars a year of potential (private) wealth, which sounded incredibly metal to me and made me love Wikipedia that much more.
