In retrospect, judging from how the mastodon/fediverse milieu has changed for the worse over the past month, I've scrapped my plans for self-hosting an instance.

It'll simply be too much work, and the off-chance of having to deal with the kind of people / dumpster denizens the run fediblock or have taken to doing dogpiling for sport here in Fediverse is a complete turn-off for me. It is simply not worth the effort.

Protip:

The people you don't like are not necessarily dumb; if you think they are automatically dumb because you ended up not liking them, well, then it's not them who are dumb.

Likely a controversial take:

Does this flash flood of new users make Mastodon/Fediverse bigger?

Hell yes!

Does it make content more interesting and varied?

Certainly does.

But does >>a million twitter emigrants make this a /better/ place?

No, unless you like having your door kicked down and a flock of colonisers fill in your living room, telling you how to run your social sphere/instance/federation with long-winded speech codes, omnipresent Content Warnings, and the whole nine yards... πŸ™„

Fediverse "tech" is certainly superior to that of Twitter, but to repeat an adage:

Tech doesn't solve cultural problems.

And Twitter's population most certainly has a bunch of ingrained cultural problems that is now foisted upon Fediverse.

If you do not despise corporate "social media" after reading this, then there's something wrong with you:

Lee Fang on Twitter: "Facebook and Twitter created special portals for the government to rapidly request takedowns of content. The portals, along with NGO partners used to censor a wide range of content, including obvious parody accounts and content disagreeing w gov pandemic policy. t.co/Jth0WUfXAI" / Twitter

@neglesaks also this kind of stuff. The only difference I see here from China is that the government in China is being honest about censorship it does, while people in the west are led to believe that there's some kind of free media.

Best advice for #twitter #twittermigration peeps coming in these days:

STOP CHASING "CURRENT THING" OUTRAGE. STOP CHASING CLICKS BY SAYING "POPULAR THINGS". ITS STUPID. IT MAKES *YOU* STUPID. STOP. JUST STOP.

Wipe the slate clean. Stop being conformist trend-chasers.

Just be yourselves.

@neglesaks I heard being contrarion was very in these days though πŸ€”

Google's "Nest" series of domestic spy apparatus is now selling for a low 33€.

Google is selling their devices for pennies to get people to turn over more of their data from their private lives - where you live, what your daily rhythm is, what your interests are, what your investment portfolio is comprised of, what music and podcasts you listen to, what products you buy from the supermarket... etc etc etc.

All that you do can and will be turned into a tradable commodity.
