to the point where you don't need to understand how to use the Linux command line, or what a database is.

the Fediverse isn't really democratic when only computer-savvy people can set up an instance.

you have stuff like https://masto.host but that's centralisation, so imagine if one of those hosting sites became "the popular choice". well, then they'd be the Facebook of the Fediverse.
