Delivery guy be like when I ordered a 50-pound oscilloscope from the 1990s. #animeirl #lain

A delivery man is painfully unloading multiple boxes for a complete computer workstation to Lain's home.

(New, Pre-production Preview, November 2021) ISOUSB211 - Low emissions, high/full/low speed isolated USB repeater ti.com/product/ISOUSB211

This is absolutely phenomenal. Texas Instruments just made a galvanic isolation ASIC for 480 Mbps (not 12 Mbps) USB 2.0 that you can actually buy. Finally this problem is solved at last. #electronics #usb

I ordered the pre-production prototype version of TI's high-speed USB isolation chips as soon as I got the news. My order has just shipped today! :blobcataww: Time to design a development board. #electronics #usb

They called it Commodore 64 because it had a 64-bit CPU.

They called it AMD64 because there were 64 games made for it.

They called it Nintendo 64 because it had 64 K of RAM.

Q: Why was the Unix standardization effort met with disbelief?

A: Single Unix Specification is SUS.

Too many anime girl pictures with programming books, but where are the anime girl pictures with infosec or hardware books like The Art of Exploitation, Applied Cryptography, Intel 64 and IA-32 Reference Manual, The Art of Electronics, Principles of Signal and Power Integrity, or The ARRL Handbook of Radio Communication?

Perhaps this will eventually be my motivation to systematically learn GIMP. But then I'm not sure. The killer feature of K&R or SICP is that literally everyone in tech can instantly recognize their unique book cover, even in a super small avatar size. The same thing can't be said for any other books...

@niconiconi The Art of Electronics is pretty instantly recognisable

Shenzhen I/O should have a realism option. When it's set to high, you need to search all over the web and pay over 200 CNY download fees in paid forums before you get the leaked datasheet you need. If you are unlucky, you have to reverse engineer the chip specification from schematics of an existing design, or if you are especially unlucky, you need to hunt all over Taobao for commercial products that internally use the chip you need for reverse engineering. #electronics

@niconiconi damn that part with leaked datasheets under a paywall is so realistic...

TFW your optical data link passed radiation test perfectly, only 5 bit errors under enormous radiation for days - then after the test, someone power cycled it - it's now completely dead because the Boot ROM or fuse has gone bad... #electronics

LANSCE neutrons, X-ray to FOCI engine (SMU)

* Neutrons at LANSCE
flux: 2.9 × 10 5 n/cm2s
total fluence 3.8×10 10 n/cm 2 (1.5 days)
* Stratix II FPGA 5 Gbps
* TX: no SEU, SEFI during test
* RX: 11 SEU (1bit), no SEFI
Error cross section:
2.7×10 11 /cm 2 (0 error)
2.9×10 10 /cm 2 (11 error)

-> Power cycle, IC initialization FAILED!

after 3.84 kGy (23 hr) -> 14 bit errors
* Increase flux to 4.46 kGr/hr
total 210 kGy (47 hr) -> 5 bit errors

DC converter checked, okay!

Could be the OTP?
non-volatile memory fragile to radiation induced charge

#TIL The reason we still don't have a feature-complete free RAR implementation in libarchive, is due to The RAR Virtual Machine! I thought the reason was RARv5, but I was wrong.

To unpack some RAR files you need to execute custom RARVM bytecode embedded in the RAR files. Not a surprise that nobody in the libarchive team has the motivation to mess with it so far.

There's at least a usable LGPL partial implementation. Whoever has too much time on their hands and loves to work with cursed project can try integrating it to libarchive...

Q: What do you say when a sensor mysteriously stopped working?

A: It doesn't make sense!

Q: Why are electronics engineers bad at cooking?
A: They use SPICE all the time.

Q: Why are infosec developers bad at cooking?
A: They use salt all the time.

The #retrocomputing scene really needs some #anime personification for classic computers. The only artist I'm aware of is @Anhanli@twitter.com, a friend's friend's friend, here's PDP8-chan and 4004-chan.

What kind of anime girl would a Data General Nova or m68k be?

Anime girl personification of DEC PDP-8, standing in front of a 19-inch rack, wearing a ribbon and holding some punchcards in one card, and holding a button on the PDP-8 front panel with another hand.
Anime girl personification of Intel C4004.

A game for hardware tinkers: identify as many CPU architectures as possible that powers the gadgets in your room, NOT including development kits.

So far I've found... Intel x86/amd64 (PC), ARC (Intel ME), Xtensa (Wi-Fi adapter), MIPS (router), Intel 8051, ARM (many things...), Renesas M16C (AV receiver), m68k/ColdFire (Tektronix TDS scope), PowerPC (LeCroy LC scope). Can't identify more without taking things apart. #electronics
