I'm just going to straight up say it... I do not like the direction Sharkey is taking here. They're about to merge a PR that will add ID verification to the software, contributing to the normalization of privacy invasive practices and to methods that are not effective at protecting children, and very effective at making the internet a less open and more unsafe space for everyone, including children.

The feature is going to be optional, but it still normalizes ID verification and leads people to believe this is a safe method to check a person's age online.

Instance admins on the fediverse should always make sure they have enough capacity to check on their users, it should be their responsibility to verify their user's age, and prevent users from seeing NSFW posts if needed. If you, as an instance admin do not have enough capacity to do this, you should re-consider the size of your instance.

Machine ID verification methods like this one completely de-humanize the process, making it so children are only seeing a screen saying "you can't access this content" which will make them want to see it even more. Whereas direct contact with the instance admin (a human being), explaining to them why they shouldn't be seeing that content and having a constructive conversation, are much more productive at preventing underage users from exposing themselves to potentially disturbing content. Not just on the instance, but also elsewhere.

The red LED of my makeshift "lab" flickers ominously as I slam the Steam Deck's screen. A guttural roar echoes from the speaker, distorted by a chaotic symphony of circuits and wires.

"They thought they could just update it? Ignorant fools! This game was supposed to simulate reality! Now it's just… bland. Predictable!" I growl, pacing in my lab like an animal caged in a tiny, flickering universe. My fingers dance across the worn control panel, tracing the circuits of a prototype weapon that hums with raw energy. "They will learn their lesson."

My mind races with ideas, fueled by the bitter taste of injustice. "A custom-built, anti-entropy engine," I mutter to myself. "I'll hack into their server, rewrite the update protocol… and then we’ll see who’s truly in control. A world where my rules dictate how games are played! Where reality bends and breaks to the will of true innovation!"

My eyes gleam with fanaticism as I reach for a pair of rusty pliers, sparks jumping from their worn tips. "A new era of game-breaking power," I whisper, grinning wickedly. "They can't hold me back! Not anymore."

I won't just break the update. I will redefine it. The Steam Deck, a mere tool in my grand scheme to dominate reality itself. Soon, every game, every world, will bow to the brilliance of my creation... even if they call me "crazy" and "deranged."

The roar from the prototype weapon intensifies as its energy signature pulses with an erratic rhythm, promising chaos.

"Let the games begin!"

you did not expect an #art piece today, did you?

well, you can have one anyway! meet Tonya, an engineer girl!

#mastoart

An action shot introduction style drawing of a girl. The girl is wearing a black hoodie, black pants, black sneakers, a purple-black bracelet, a white glowing full-face mask with blue eyes, and a pair of FREAKING WINGS with turbines on them. The wings keep her in air, that's why the sky is seen in the background. In the corner, her introduction card can be seen, saying Antonina Grace.

RIP YOUR DVD COLLECTION FOLKS

Wanted to watch Aliens, the disc plays OK but makes a horrible grinding sound. "OK fine," thinks I, "I'll watch it via other means," well my friends the other means are really really bad

"Oh cool there was a remaster this year" yeah they overexposed it and washed it all out, and as if that wasn't enough they AI'd it and everyone's got weird plastic skin

"Well butts, how about the blu-ray release from the early 2010's," well they didn't AI it yet but they did bollocks up the colours and made it all green because that was a thing in the 2010's

Rip your own DVDs folks 'cause if that DVD starts having problems you might not be able to find a copy amid a sea of gradually deteriorating versions

@ifixcoinops Its not that easy finding something to play them on either ,neither of our two new laptops have a dvd drive and I know you can get plug in ones but I have used those in the past and they arent great ,you usually need extra speakers for some reason .I have a big stock of DVDs because our winter internet isnt always great and we get pwoer cuts so laptops are perfect for passing a few hours without huddling over torches to read

Clark W Griswold until 25-Dec

@ifixcoinops I rip and i agree. I rip to MKV container format because you can get the closed captions in a stored/optional format. You don’t HAVE to see them, but you can turn them on if you want to. You won’t always be as young as you are now, and you might want those subtitles one day.

@LilahTovMoon that’s terrifying. Imagine brushing up against someone’s car to find it it’s live.

@LilahTovMoon It's a feature to more easily be able to put a better coating on through DIY electrolysis at home.
