In medieval times it was common to have ā€œ2ā€ sleeps per night. You would fall asleep for 4 to 5 hours, wake up for 2 hours or so and fall back to sleep for another 3 to 4. Itā€™s been suggested that we may have evolved this way to tend to the fire in order to keep us warm and safe.

First and second sleep!

I wonder if their dog got up with them or just stayed on the bed and kept it warm for when they got back in?

Chris

@globalmuseum me when the alarm goes off:
"We've had one sleep, yes. What about second sleep?"

This window is over 400 years old.

It's the perfect example of a "jali", an intricately carved stone window common in Indian Architecture.

And it's just one of the many things that make Indian Architecture so special...

Thereā€™s a ā€˜Cat-astropheā€™ Brewing on Downing Street.

Larry, the Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, has now outlasted five prime ministersā€”and their pets. A British icon, he has his own unofficial X account, with 900K followers. He is so well known that Downing St. has even reportedly made plans for how to break the news of his eventual death (Larry is 17).

When sperm whales need a nap, they take a deep breath, dive down about 45 feet and arrange themselves into perfectly-level, vertical patterns. They sleep sound and still for up to two hours at a time between breaths, in pods of 5 or 6 whales, presumably for protection. No one knew whales slept vertically until a 2008 study documented the behavior. And no one captured really good photography of it in the wild until 2017.

@globalmuseum Wow. Iā€™ve heard about a few years ago but never seen a photo like this about it. Thank you for sharing.

Makes me wonder if this somehow helps the CSF of whales circulate through their brains to wash away toxins. Is this the balance point where their buoyancy balances their weight. Are they "Sleeping in weightlessness?"

#InternationalCatDay: a terrific #Egyptian gold finger-ring with a carnelian bezel in form of a #cat. The ring is presumably related to the goddess Bastet, who was worshipped in the form of a lion and a cat.

The man who forever changed how we see catsšŸ˜ŗ

Louis Wain (1860-1939) was an English artist best known for his unique drawings of cats with human-like traits and behaviours.

It all started with Peter, his pet cat, whom he sketched to bring comfort to his terminally ill wife, Emily.

Encouraged by Emily to share his work with the world, Wain often credited Peter as the "principal model and the pioneer of my success."

It's #InternationalCatDay and for centuries these creatures have been trusted ship mates. Sailors brought them on board to keep to control rodents & they acted as companions on long journeys at sea!

@globalmuseum @minorusaba one of my friends in a community close to where we live that is famous for fireflies has the annual neighborhood responsibility of clearing the ditches so that they are ready for firefly viewing. When I first arrived in Japan there was little awareness and the overuse of pesticides and chemicals in rice paddies and industry had nearly caused all the fireflies to disappear entirely.

This is a cute read but the final paragraph should concern us all:

"Starlink satellites are responsible for 1,600 near-crashes in orbit every week, reports Futurismā€™s Dan Robitzski, a number that he reports is likely to increase as Starlink plans to launch more satellites."

Cistercian Numbers; are an extremely interesting and basically forgotten number system developed 8 Centuries Ago. It is much more compact than Arabic and Roman systems, you can basically write any integer from 1 to 9999 with one character.
