it seems that the good times for online minecraft play are over.

when microsoft required each minecraft account to be linked with a microsoft account, i reluctantly created 3 microsoft accounts for my 3 licences and migrated. not because i agree with the system, but because i still occasionally played on online servers.

now, it's basically dangerous to play on any online server. microsoft has introduced a chat signing system, and with it, a chat reporting system. it's been implemented so poorly that you can be banned for literally anything (picrel 1). and by banned i dont mean restricted from 1 server. you will never be able to play online or on realms ever again with that account (picrel 2).

centralized chat and account moderation goes against everything minecraft stood for, but it's obvious that microsoft doesn't care about this property anymore. they delayed the 1.19 update not to remove the chat reporting system because of massive backlash, but to PUBLICLY LABEL PEOPLE AS "NOT SECURE" when they use a mod like "no-chat-reports", which disables the message signing system (https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/minecraft-1-19-1-pre-release-2).

im still going to play minecraft on the cracked server i run. we're going to try to disable this system on the server side and advise our players to use no-chat-reports. it's just a shame that playing online is essentially a liability now.
