If GPIO registers were added, we could do some clever things..

Your tools don't have to work against you. These ecosystems we've built don't have to rest on these foundations. There's more to programming than playing with a computer blind.

Programming doesn't have to be hard. We're so far removed from the things we want to write, sketch and dream. I'm personally sick of it. Aren't you?
