Inverted photograph of a gray kitty with big dilated crazy eyes lying on a light gray ottoman with one paw on each of his ape daddy's pasty legs; his head is curled upside down and his face is a mask of neurotic indoor-cat twilight-crazies

We have three kitties and one is a good kitty.

TIL the etymology of the English word "thing:"

"A thing was a governing assembly in early Germanic society. Things took place at regular intervals, usually at prominent places that were accessible by travel. They provided legislative functions, as well as being social events and opportunities for trade. In modern usage, the meaning of this word has shifted to mean not just an assemblage but simply an object of any sort."

How am I only learning this today?

@jameshowell I remember reading about Vikings when I was kid. The assemblies were Things, the stick they used to summon a thing was a Thingbod, and the big assembly of everybody was the Althing.

I was reminded of this recently when I read Kristin Lavransdatter. This recent translation kept the Norwegian _ting_ though.

@jameshowell this is a very strange transformation: from people's assembly to an abstract object.
though, in ancient Russian the governing assembly of citizens was called вече (veche) and it sounds pretty similar to the word thing - вещь (vesch). I don't think they're relative, but who knows...

Folding laundry, I turned by back for a few SECONDS.

Bonus points if you can spot the flying squirrel toy that opposable thumbs did not mix with the clean laundry. #caturday

Bad kitties sitting on piles of sorted laundry just about to be folded, mere seconds after the human turned his back between sorting and folding.

@jameshowell This talk is highly recommended for any person who teaches in class, hybrid or online. His setup is cheap, well thought and allows for good online #didactics.

If you're not into #Emacs: Don't worry, it is only one piece in his setup.
