Pando is the largest and oldest living organism on Earth. 47,000 clone trees with identical genetics growing from the same root.

It’s about 34,000 years old. When he appeared, there were still mammoths on Earth.

In Spain in 1914, Aurora Carballeira gave birth to a daughter to raise her as a model of the “woman of the future”: a prodigy, a feminist, a political activist.

But when her daughter turned 18, her mother killed her in her sleep. Most likely she was afraid she was starting to lose control of her daughter.

Her official reason for the murder: “the sculptor, after discovering the most minimal imperfection in her work, destroys it.”

Sprites are a rare type of lightning that are very large and strike upwards.

They were only discovered in 1989 with the development of cameras because the event is too rare (although there is evidence from 1956 and maybe even earlier, but those were probably written off as demons/UFOs).

The new photo by Matthew Dominick from ISS does a great job of showing how huge sprites are with the example of the height of the Earth’s atmosphere.

In World War II, they were able to make an electronic lamp inside the projectile that would not be broken by the acceleration of the shot (20,000 g).

These lamps were used in the remote fuzes.

Their secret was guarded to a similar level as the atom bomb project. They were used only in those situations (air defense) where they could not fall into enemy hands.

Because of them, the chances of shooting down a Fau-1 went from 24% to 79%.

Columbus wasn’t in trouble because people thought the Earth was flat.

The monks not only knew the Earth was round, but they knew its radius, and that’s a distance to Asia you can’t sail.

It was Columbus who came up with the wrong Earth radius.

In 1922, New York had riots because of hats.

At that time there were strict fashion rules - a straw hat could be worn only in summer. Those who forgot to update their closet could even be beaten (in 1924 a man was even killed).

But in 1922 the tradition went too far. Teenagers in groups of 1000 people mocked people who forgot to update their hats.

Mata Hari, the famous courtesan of the Belle Époque, was shot on charges of espionage.

The head ended up in the Museum of Anatomy in Paris and then "lost".

I imagine some rich private collector bragging to his friends.

A supporter of Britain in the War of Independence allied with the Indians, and they took advantage of the complex status of Spanish Florida to declare themselves a separate state.

During World War II, the Germans took all the thorium they could find out of France.

The Allies thought it was for the German atomic bomb.

But it turned out to be a manufacturer of radioactive toothpaste (!) trying to monopolize the thorium market.

Anime has a special genre about professions (baking bread, hiking).

Moyashimon is about microbiology. The hero, a student at an agricultural university, sees bacteria.

It’s cute that the Wikipedia article lists not only human heroes, but also bacteria.

The last time all people were together on the planet Earth was October 31, 2000.

Since that day, for all 24 years at least some people have been living off Earth, as astronauts have been on constant non-stop duty on the ISS.

There is a famous Moore’s Law: that the number of transistors in processors doubles every 2 years.

But programs still slow.

Because there is also Wirth’s Law: programs get slower much faster than computers get faster.

Balkans had “vowed virgins” tradition. A girl could take a vow of celibacy before the elders and start living in society as a man (wearing men's clothes, doing traditionally male things, voting, inheriting property).

It was done by the daughters of families who were left without a man. Or a girl could avoid being married off by changing her social role.
