Back when XMPP was still relevant (2008-2010), some of the people I knew dreamt about phone numbers being eliminated as a concept within a decade, if not sooner. That everyone would be able to just get an OpenID account on any server, have an XMPP account for texts and calls with the literally same address schema, email with the same address, etc. You could just tell your friends that you are reachable at anon@coolserver.net and voila! You can receive emails, texts (via XMPP), even calls. You can log into various sites, because certainly everyone will eventually adopt OpenID.

Fifteen years down the road, what instead happened is that almost every popular messaging app today relies on a phone number as a main address scheme and a proof of identity. Those lads couldn't be more wrong.

Time to ask questions, boys!

What communications tools/chat protocols do you use in 2023 for PERSONAL communications? Only select those you have used in the past week or two. If you only write via Facebook to your grandma once a year, don't select it.

Also, I don't care if your workplace uses Slack or MS Teams. Only choose the options you use for personal stuff.

Please, repost for greater reach.

DELETED

@newt@stereophonic.space Matrix for 99% (every day, all day) and XMPP for a friend who doesn't use Matrix (he's the only one). I even have my own Matrix homeserver and I even got my grandmother to sign up for Matrix so I could delete Telegram

Fascists! Fascists everywhere!

I just love deranged twitter users, you know. Making your software closed source because you don't want fascists to use it is something new to me. :rms: would be proud!

@newt i think the only reason that they are cool is that they fully embraced being niche professional tools instead of competing for mass adoption against the apple, samsung and xiaomi ones.
