The first Android 15 beta is HERE! Android 15 Beta 1 is rolling out today to users enrolled in the Android beta program. Supported devices include the Pixel 6 and newer, as well as the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold.

Here’s what’s new in Android 15 Beta 1, according to Google:

* As I first reported, apps targeting Android 15 are now displayed edge-to-edge by default when running on Android 15! This means apps won’t have to call the edge-to-edge APIs to show content behind system bars in Android 15, though they should call those APIs to do so in earlier releases. To assist app developers in supporting edge-to-edge, many Material 3 composables handle insets for you.

@MishaalRahman do you have any word on the corruption issue? I’m not installing squat until I hear about that, even though I want this thing so badly I can just about start hopping around right now. I played with developer preview one until someone alerted me of a horrible bug affecting the pixel seven line that caused the corruption thing anytime you rebooted your phone.

It's official: Google I/O 2024 takes place on May 14!

I'll hopefully get to be there again.

@MishaalRahman meh, with the way and type of announcements, I wouldn't go even if I had the ability, rather just stay at home and watch all the stuff on demand (especially considering multiple sessions running side-by-side)

I was cleaning out some boxes in my closet last weekend when I discovered I still had these phones.

Man, what a blast from the past.

@MishaalRahman This post inspired me to dig into my ‘drawer’. Historically was using Android as my daily until the release of iPhone 13 mini. A few have been either stolen or traded in along the way, but: HTC Aria, Moto E 2nd gen, Galaxy S6, Moto G Play, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S. The iPhones prior to the Xr were all inherited for specific uses. Xr is a work phone.

Last pics are first, biggest, current. Somebody please make me a modern full screen phone in an Aria form factor.

@MishaalRahman same happened to me last week (but it was a couple of flip phones) and one had a swollen battery 🤣

FINALLY! Gboard is preparing to add an "undo" function so you can recover deleted words/sentences. Here's a demo of the feature in the latest beta release.

Credits go to Akos Paha from the Rboard Themes Telegram group for discovering this!

I recommend following the Rboard Themes group if you want to keep up-to-date specifically about the Gboard app!

One of the features I was expecting to see in Android 14 was the ability to turn your phone into a USB webcam for your PC.

Google hasn't talked about this feature yet, but I hope they still plan to ship it!

Here's some tidbits about Android 14's USB webcam feature 👇

So back in February, I discovered (twitter.com/MishaalRahman/stat) code changes in AOSP that hinted at a new "DeviceAsWebcam" service (which upon re-reading the code changes I now believe to be a separate system app) that "turns an Android device into a webcam."

Android devices that support the UVC gadget mode (ie. the kernel is compiled with CONFIG_USB_CONFIGFS_F_UVC=y) can be set up to send camera frames to a /dev/video* node that a host device supporting UVC webcams can read from.
