Fediverse flagship and oldest continuously-running instance shitposter.club has announced a switch to Mastodon :mastodon:

The embattled, controversial server has been a mainstay of the Fediverse for over 8 years. Starting April, coinciding with the transition to a new server name. SHITPOSTER WORLD LLC will switch to the popular Pleroma alternative, Mastodon. CEO Moon Man: "we needed a solution that would scale along with our community and Mastadon checked all the right boxes. We anticipate a smooth transition, which is absolutely necessary for us to move forward. Pleroma has served us well over the years but it is time to adopt a leaner and more corporate-friendly solution."

Pleroma shares took a hit at the news, dropping over 100 dollars a share. Pleroma CEO Lain Witherspoon announced "we are sorry to see shitposter club go. We believe we still have compelling offerings for the discerning small-business customer. #ItsAlwaysPleroma :pleroma:

The poll isn't over yet but we are probably gonna use:

We will be adding an invidious instance and a few other services, my goal is all new services will use the pleroma database for user authentication, sort of like single sign on

the problem here is you guys have a 100%-or-nothing litmus test. if you want software that never changes then expend the effort to learn the libre tool and accept the limitations, rather than the proprietary tool that needs to change every year so a company can sell it again. if you refuse to learn anything and just want instant gratification, that's fine but then you don't get sympathy when the company changes the software or jacks the price up. it isn't just foss people with a bad attitude. for 24 years i hear people complaining about microsoft windows changing everything around. i've been using the same linux desktop since 1999 because i took a day to customize blackbox/openbox to exactly what i like.

It's been less than two days. I wrote all the ActivityPub shit from scratch (except HTTP signatures.) Following and unstyled blog posts are already federating. AP endpoints work. It serves raw markdown and rendered HTML. I am using Zod ActivityPub schemas to validate incoming AP objects, that I stole from @alex 's Ditto project, thanks.

This is Pleroma-first development. When it works with Pleroma, I stop coding that feature. When this is released, I'll accept pull requests to make it work with the weird ActivityPub platforms like Mastodon.

Still lots to do:

* render to html before federating (easy)
* embedded images
* federate edits
* wysiwyg markdown frontend (currently it uses a cli to push markdown from files)
* honor unfollows

Right now I'm calling it "ActivityPress" but I'm probably going to change it to something else. Considering "Fartsmith".
